Car full of children crashes into church

Some passengers suffer serious injuries; driver does not have valid license.

The Elyria post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle serious injury crash on Broadway Avenue just North of Cooper Foster Park Road in Sheffield Township.

As of this morning, none of the injuries appeared to be-life threatening, troopers said.

At 6:31 p.m. Saturday, troopers were advised of a motor vehicle crash on Broadway Avenue in front of the Broadway Assembly Church. Troopers arrived on scene and located a black Ford Fusion crashed into the Broadway Assembly Church on the northwest corner of the building.  Firefighters and EMS personnel were already on scene No other vehicles were involved, and no one was injured inside the church building.

Evidence on scene revealed the black Ford Fusion was traveling south on Broadway when the vehicle went left of center and off the east side the avenue, troopers said. The vehicle struck a mailbox, two traffic sign posts and an embankment. The vehicle continued across the parking lot of Broadway Assembly before striking landscape rocks, a mailbox, and finally the church building. There was significant damage to the church building with exterior rocks and bricks being thrown into the classroom. There was a church function inside the church at the time; however, no one was in the classroom where the damage occurred. 

The driver was identified as Jose A. Guerra, 26, of 219 W. 38th St in Lorain. He sustained non-incapacitating injuries from the crash and was wearing safety belt.  Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as a factor in the crash. However, Guerra does not have a valid driver’s license.

Alyssa Leos, 12, of Lorain - back seat unrestrained, minor injuries
Emily Velez, 7, of Lorain –front seat wearing a lap and shoulder belt, serious injuries
Jose Howard-Guerra, 10, of Lorain – back seat unrestrained, serious injuries
Jozaiah A Guerra, 6, of Lorain – back seat floorboard unrestrained, serious injuries
Arisol Price, 14, of Lorain – back seat unrestrained, minor injuries
Jaden Guerra, 7, of Lorain – back seat unrestrained, no injuries.

There were no booster seats in the vehicle at the time of the crash, troopers said. 

Agencies on scene included Elyria Township EMS, Sheffield Township Fire and EMS, Lorain County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia Gas, Rich’s Towing and the state Highway Patrol.
