Sheriff seeks help in naming new police dog

K-9 unit to be used at the Huron County Jail.

Huron County Sheriff Dane Howard is counting on the help of all first-graders in Huron County.

A new police dog should arrive within two weeks at the county jail, where it will be used.

Howard is asking each first-grade classroom to help name the dog by submitting suggestions to the sheriff's office, 255 Shady Lane Drive, Norwalk.

The new dog is a boy and the names should have a law-enforcement theme. The deadline is 3 p.m. April 23.

Stories about the new dog and naming contest were published in Monday's Norwalk Reflector. To read the stories, pick up a copy of that issue or subscribe to the e-paper (a complete digital replica of each issue) for less than $1 per week and read them now.

enough of the bs

So let me get this straight, poor Dane cant properly buget the money to hire enough people to cover the road, with the cars he also cannot budget for all because the mean evil council people won't give him unlimited funding. Now he gets another dog which makes it 4 dogs for this office that has less staff than most cities in the area who make do with one or no dogs at all. I would hope taxpayers are seeing the real reason for financial problems the sheriff office is facing and it does not appear to be a lack of money. Maybe he will turn the dogs loose to do foot patrol in the county after another poor decision breaks the bank and keeps more manpower off the road.

stewie

So are you suggesting a police dog costs as much as a police officer? I have had a few dogs in my life (granted not a highly pet agreed police dog) but I gotta think that a police dog costs a whole lot less than:
- Salary for a full time officer
- Benefits including unemployment insurance, health care, retirement, workers comp insurance
- Police car
- Uniform and police equipment
- Training

How much do you think these police dogs cost? Oh, and I bet this new dog will be able to find drugs more constantly and quicker than 20 full-time officers.

GOOD JOB SHERIFF!

enough of the bs

Last I checked the k-9's are not able to answer calls or patrol which is the main function of the deputies that are badly needed in heroin county

betrump

So many complain about the drug problem in the county, and he's trying to do something about it. I guess no matter what he does, he's gonna have people complaining.

uncommoncents

How bout we call him Seebeceff "CBCF" since any criminals this dog is able to expose will just be given a slap on the wrist and turned over to community based corrections.
