Kevin M. Gullick will carry his injuries from an East Side shootout for the rest of his life.

He could spend all of that time behind bars.

Gullick, 44, was sentenced yesterday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years for murdering a 27-year-old man over a game of dice.

A Franklin County jury convicted Gullick last month in the shooting death of David K. Burkes Jr. in a house at 1703 Elaine Rd. on Dec. 8, 2011.

Assistant Prosecutor Nathan Yohey said the murder was committed “for entirely trivial reasons.” One witness testified that Gullick thought Burkes had cheated him in the dice game.

Gullick, of Whims Road on the Far East Side, was wounded in an exchange of gunfire at the house, but investigators were unable to determine who else fired a gun.

Defense attorney Richard Cline said his client wears a colostomy bag because of abdominal injuries and has a permanent limp from bullet wounds to the leg and hip.

Common Pleas Judge Laurel Beatty imposed the mandatory sentence of 15 years to life for the murder and added three years because a gun was used in the crime. She also sentenced him to three years for having a gun despite a felony conviction for drug possession, but said that sentence would run concurrent to the time for the murder.

Beatty credited Gullick with the 369 days he has spent in jail since his release from the hospital.

Wow...a court system that seems to actually work! Regardless this d-bags injuries (all the while self induced) didn't keep him from behind bars. Yet, in Erie, and Huron county, although on lesser charges, criminals get a swat on the fanny, then sent to a rehab/vacation, all the while, us taxpayers foot the bill. I understand we also carry felons in the penile system, but at least their paying time for their crimes.
