The Elyria post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that took place on Ohio 57 in Lorain County's Grafton Township, just south of the village of Grafton.

At 7:21 a.m. today, troopers received a call about a car submerged in a pond near the intersection of Ohio 57 and Mennnel Road. The caller remained at the scene.

EMS personnel arrived at 7:26 a.m. and no vehicle was visible, troopers said. Tire marks were visible leading northbound from the T-intersection of 57 and Mennell.

Evidence and witness statements revealed a vehicle was traveling north on Mennell, ran a stop sign at the Ohio 57 intersection and drove off the north side of that state route, troopers said.

The vehicle entered a partially frozen pond and became submerged in about 10 feet of water.

Rescue personnel worked exhaustively for more than an hour to recover the vehicle. The vehicle as recovered at 9:03 a.m., and one victim was discovered inside, troopers said.

EMS personnel began treating the person at the scene, and then used a Metro Life Flight helicopter to fly him to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Dominic D. Zunis, 18, of Elyria.

EMS personnel searched the pond and found no other victims.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash, troopers said.

Agencies on scene included the Lorain County EMA, Metro Light Flight, Grafton Village Fire Department, American Red Cross, Grafton Police, Grafton Township Fire Department, Eaton Township Fire Department, ODOT, Lorain County Sheriff's Office and the Lorain County Dive Team.

The Ohio Investigative Unit is assisting in the investigation.

Trying for an hour, then you get the body out and think he could possibly be alive? or am I reading this wrong? Rip whoever it is..

I think there is a condition where if a person's body is cold enough (like submerged in a freezing pond) there is a chance to revive them? Especially with a young healthy victim.
