First triathlon goes off without a hitch

People from Norwalk to Chicago, first-timers to iron man competitors and plenty of spectators all were on hand Saturday at the first Fisher-Titus Medical Center Maple City Triathlon.

The event was held at the Veterans Memorial Lake Park.

The race started in the water with the male 20 to 29 age group and then every two minutes after another group would start the race. After about 50 minutes every participant had finished the 800-meter swim about half a mile.

"I think it's great," Paula Raney, a volunteer and spectator said. "I give these people a lot of credit for just finishing."

After the swim, participants followed orange cones up to the transition area. At the transition area, participants put on their biking clothes and started their 16-mile bike ride.

When they finished the bike ride they came back to the transition area, put their bike away and started the final leg of the race, the 3.1-mile run.

"It was good; you just had to keep going. The worst part was going from the bike to the run," first-time triathlete Tommy Schlotterer said.

The first person to cross the finish line was Shannon Kurek, who finished the race in an hour and 13 minutes.

The spectators were very enthusiastic. Some even made T-shirts for their favorite participant to cheer them on.

The only accident that occurred happened on the bike course said Niki Cross, event coordinator. The person did not have any major injuries but bad road rash that kept him from continuing the race. There also were a couple of people who didn't finish the race.

"It was my first time, so learning what a triathlon is like and learning about the transition area was fun," Adam Laskos said. "I'm a big runner, so getting used to the bike and swim was a challenge."

The race took about two hours and 45 minutes for everyone to cross the finish line.

"The best part is that we had beautiful weather, a lot of new people and to see them cross that finish line was heartwarming," Cross said.

Prizes were given to the top three in each age group.

The top male overall was Shannon Kurek, of Alexandria, and the top female overall was Pam Harpst, of Blissfield, Mich.

"Since there was such a good response, we plan on doing the same thing next year two months to rest then plan for next year," Cross said. "It was just an amazing event and everyone helping made it a dream come true."

What a great event for our community and all of the people around us who were involved! This was very well planned out and had an awesome turn out! I didn't expect that many people to show up. Great Job to all who helped out. I had a blast.
