Six people have been indicted by a Champaign County grand jury in connection with a theft ring in which items were stolen from Urbana’s Walmart and then returned for cash with the help of an employee.
The suspected ringleader of the group was Scott E. Rollins, 40, of 401 Western Ave., Mechanicsburg, said Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell. Rollins is accused of stealing items from Walmart, 1840 E. U.S. 36, between November last year and January this year. Rollins faces one count each of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.
Amber J. Jenkins, 29, of 419 Loudon St., Urbana, was an employee at Walmart and is accused of helping return the stolen items for cash, Lingrell said. She faces one count each of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, conspiracy, complicity in the commission of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal simulation.
Police were investigating another case when they learned about the incidents at Walmart. Security staff from the store helped investigate the case, which included video evidence and statements from many of the suspects involved. Police were able to track at least $1,500 in thefts, but the total figure stolen was probably higher, Lingrell said. Police believe the case involved several other individuals who could also face charges.
Others indicted in connection with the thefts include:
•Kelly L. Rockhold, 50, of 718 W. Light St., Urbana, on one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, and nine counts each of petty theft and receiving stolen property.
•Brittany D. Gibson, 27, of 365 Henry St., Urbana, on one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and three counts each of petty theft and receiving stolen property.
•Elvin H. Burkhart, IV, 34, being held at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, on one count engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and two counts each of petty theft and receiving stolen property.
•Matthew R. Arms, 37, of 1510 Children’s Home Road, Urbana, on one count each of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, petty theft and attempted petty theft and two counts receiving stolen property.
