A New Lexington man was classified as a sex offender this afternoon and sentenced to five years of probation for a fall Internet police sting.

Kyle R. Halsey, 26, was apprehended during an Oct. 25 traffic stop after driving to Wakeman for the purposes of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl. Part-time Wakeman Police Officer Josh Rice was posing online as the juvenile when Halsey had a sexual conversation with Rice in a chat room.

“He didn’t remember having a condom at the time of the meeting,” Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said. “Nobody is going to be fooled by this. You might as well admit to it.”

Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway sentenced Halsey to 80 days in jail and fined him $1,000. The judge further prohibited the defendant from using a personal computer or cell phone and from having any association with juveniles “outside of family members” during his five years of probation.

Conway also ordered Halsey to undergo and complete sex offender counseling at his own cost and recommended a Lancaster facility where Halsey’s defense attorney had sent several other clients.

Halsey will be required to register his address with the Perry County Sheriff’s Office annually for the next 15 years, coinciding with an updated state law going into effect Jan. 8. He pleaded guilty June 15 to importuning in exchange for the state dismissing one count of possession of criminal tools.
