Motorist flees traffic stop, crashes

He and his 60-year-old female passenger sent to hospital with incapacitating injuries.

The Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol is currently investigating an injury crash that occurred at 4:09 p.m. Saturday on West Catawba Road, west of Ohio 53, on Ottawa County's Catawba Island.

Wesley J. Miller, 48, of Port Clinton, was driving a 1989 Ford F-150 when an Ottawa County sheriff’s deputy attempted make a traffic stop, troopers said. Miller failed to comply and fled.

A pursuit ensued involving the sheriff’s department and Port Clinton Police Department. Toward the end of the pursuit, Miller was southbound on West Catawba Road and failed to negotiate a curve. He went off the right side of the road, struck a street sign and then hit a tree, troopers said.

Miller sustained incapacitating injuries. He was first transported to the Magruder Hospital emergency room in Port Clinton, then flown by a LifeFlight helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.   

His passenger, Marilyn L. Miller, 60, of Port Clinton, also sustained incapacitating injuries. She was transported to Magruder Hospital. 

The Catawba Island Police Department also assisted at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and Port Clinton Police Department will be issuing charges for the pursuit. The Highway Patrol will be issuing charges for the crash.  No charges have been issued at this time.
