A truck driver who crashed into a work area on the Ohio Turnpike killing a Perrysburg man last year pleaded guilty Tuesday to vehicular homicide.

Edward Mills, 54, of Doylestown, entered the plea in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court before Judge John Dewey. No sentencing date was set, but prosecutors said they would recommend a 60-day jail sentence for the first-degree misdemeanor.

Mills was westbound on the turnpike near Fremont on Jan. 24, 2012, when his rig entered the closed lanes of a construction area and struck and killed John Fletcher, 53. Two other turnpike maintenance workers were injured.

Fletcher, who was living in Perrysburg at the time of his death, was born on Thanksgiving day in 1958 in Norwalk, son of the late Forest and Jeanne Fletcher.

He was a graduate of Western Reserve High School and Bowling Green State University. When he was killed, Fletcher was employed as an assistant foreman for the Ohio Turnpike Commission, where he had been employed for almost 30 years. He also worked for National Family Opinion in Northwood and Hershey Food Corporation.

Survivors included his wife, Amy L. Fletcher; children, Christopher, Lorna and Katie; and brothers, David Fletcher of Euclid, and Jim (Pam) Fletcher. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Not making light of the situation here. Recall our driver education instructor, "If you are going to kill someone use your vehicle because you won't be charged as much." Sadly he is right.
