Passerby mistakes steam for smoke

Firefighters respond to 9-1-1 call involving 'sugar shack.'

A passerby mistook steam coming from a place which makes maple syrup for smoke.

The 9-1-1 call meant the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 2005 Ohio 61, North Fairfield. Willard Fire & Rescue provided mutual aid.

Huron County sheriff's dispatchers received the call of a possible structure fire at 11:35 p.m. Monday.

Willard, which was dispatched two minutes later, sent eight firefighters in a tanker, engine and ambulance.

"Our ambulance got there first," shift supervisor Max Helton said.

He said firefighters determined it was just steam coming from the "sugar shack" and the caller must have mistaken it for smoke.

"I live in Norwalk, so I drive by there a lot and it does put out quite a bit of steam," Helton said.

The Willard crew cleared the scene 15 minutes after arriving at the scene.

Fairfield Volunteer Fire Chief Edward Eden couldn't be reached for comment.

Ty mikeylikesit I have been working on being a more heartfelt person.. I want people to get that warm comfortable feeling when reading my statements. I respect you as a creative writer aswell. I do not speak from the heart much.

im feeling you man. i too try to impart that warm fuzzy feeling but im not having much luck. the people on sandusky register site are just not feeling it. check out the pit bull stories over there..
