WAKEMAN - Wakeman Reserve Police Officer Joe Kuchler was injured early Thursday morning when he climbed a fence in pursuit of a male suspect who remains at large.

Kuchler, 31, with the department since June 2005, has been released from the Allen Medical Center emergency room after being treated for damage to the ligaments near his knee, Chief Tim Hunker said.

"He'll be going to light duty on his full-time job," Hunker added. "He's at home with his leg up (in an air cast)."

Shortly after 1 a.m., Kuchler saw a man staggering on Pleasant Street. "The guy ended up taking off on him," Hunker said.

The officer called for back-up and chased the suspect to a Pleasant Street home where there was a suspected underage party. "From there, people basically scattered," the chief said.

The man ran through the back of the home, through the front door and to the back of a neighbor's residence where there was a fence. "Evidently there were two fences back-to-back and (Kuchler) didn't realize it," Hunker said.

Charges are pending against five adults and two juveniles in connection with the underage party.
