A 27-year-old East Side man admitted yesterday that he killed his then-girlfriend’s 3-month-old daughter while baby-sitting the infant in Whitehall.
Robert H. Robinson of E. Mound Street pleaded guilty to one count each of involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and child endangering in the death of Zyanna Bruton.
The prosecution and defense recommended 20 years in prison as part of a plea agreement, but Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David W. Fais ordered a presentence investigation. He will impose a sentence at a Feb. 20 hearing.
The maximum penalty for the offenses is 27 years. The plea agreement reduced a murder charge to involuntary manslaughter.
Assistant Prosecutor Robert Letson said the child’s mother left the baby and her two other children in Robinson’s care at a S. Yearling Road apartment for about five hours on Dec. 30, 2011. When she returned, Robinson told her the baby was asleep in her crib. Minutes later, he went to check on the baby and returned to say she was having a seizure.
Paramedics responded to a 911 call and found the infant dead. Letson said an autopsy determined that the baby had suffered multiple skull fractures, bleeding in the brain and retinal hemorrhages, and had died before the mother came home.
Robinson did not make a statement during the hearing. Letson told the judge he didn’t have an explanation for Robinson’s actions.
