Columbus police arrested a man Tuesday who is charged with murder in a fatal shooting that took place the previous day on the South Side.
Beau Stephenson, 30, of 2358 Nottaway Court, Grove City, was arrested at 1864 Stoneview Court in the Parkway Village Condominiums on the South Side. Stephenson tried to flee but was apprehended by SWAT officers around 4:15 p.m., police said.
Stephenson is charged with killing Chris Manley, 40, at 1049 Harmon Ave. in the Caravan Village trailer park.
Hank Romine, who lives at the Harmon Avenue address, told police that Manley, who is his nephew, was helping him after he had recently undergone cancer treatment. They were sitting at a table when a man barged into the trailer about 3 a.m. and fired a handgun at Manley, police said.
Manley died at the scene and the assailant fled.
Robbery is thought to be the motive, police homicide detective Philip Paley said. Investigators don’t think Stephenson knew Manley, Paley said.
According to state records, Stephenson has served three terms in Ohio prisons: nearly two years beginning in 2005 for burglary in Franklin County and carrying a concealed weapon in Madison County; three months in 2003-04 for receiving stolen property convictions in Franklin County; and a year in 2001-02 for burglary, theft and drug charges in Franklin and Madison counties.
