Army helicopter pilot Thomas P. J. Root was promoted to captain in a ceremony at Camp Stryker at Baghdad, Iraq, held on July 4.

Root, a captain, is a platoon leader in Crazyhorse Troop of the 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment.

He and the pilots in his command fly OH-58D Kiowa Warrior armed reconnaissance helicopters in support of 3rd Infantry Division in operations around and south of Baghdad.

Root is a 2000 graduate of Norwalk High School and a 2004 graduate of West Point. He is the son of Tom and Kathy Root of Norwalk.
