Walking tour

The final guided walking tour of Norwalk's West Main Street Historic District will be Sunday.

The tour, sponsored by the Firelands Historical Society, will leave from the Firelands Museum, 4 Case Ave., at 2 p.m. The museum is behind the Norwalk Public Library.

This is the 20th year the society has sponsored the popular tours.

Mary Carabin, society secretary, will lead the tour. She will identify architectural styles and give the history of early residents of the homes.

The historic district is bounded on the east by the Norwalk Public Library, includes the Firelands Museum, and extends west on Main Street to about the 200 block. Walking distance for the complete tour to the west boundary and returning to the museum is about two miles.

The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. A 1967 Ohio Historic Survey said Norwalk's West Main Street, "Architecturally is the best individual street of homes in Ohio." One reason is the range of architectural styles.

It includes examples of most of the prominent architectural styles of 19th century as well as early 20th century America.

There is no charge for the tour but donations to the historical society will be accepted.
