The 16-year-old girl killed inside an Akron home early Sunday was pregnant, authorities said Monday.

Anna Karam was shot and killed inside an East Archwood Avenue home along with 19-year-old Jessica L. Halman, 19, of Norton.

Halman is hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Her condition has not been released.

Both victims had been shot in the head.

The accused shooter, David Stoddard, 24, of Barberton, is being held in the Summit County Jail under a $250,000 cash bond. He pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, attempted murder and felonious assault charges during his initial appearance Monday morning in Akron Municipal Court.

His attorney, Jon Sinn, said he was unsure if Karam’s pregnancy will elevate charges against Stoddard. The teen was four months pregnant.

“At this point, he maintains his innocence, and we’re going to let Akron police finish their investigation before commenting further,” Sinn said.

Stoddard knew both of his alleged victims as friends of his girlfriend. Police said he went to the home about 4 a.m. Sunday and entered through a sliding-glass door. Inside, police said, he shot Karam in the living room, then walked to the kitchen, where he shot Halman.

Witnesses inside the house identified Stoddard as the shooter. Hours later, Wadsworth police spotted Stoddard’s Nissan Pathfinder outside a High Street motel.

Wadsworth officers and Medina County SWAT officers arrested Stoddard without incident inside a room.

Stoddard, an Army veteran who left the service through a medical discharge, was arrested in November for carrying a concealed handgun. His license to carry a firearm had lapsed, his attorney said.

Stoddard was free on a $10,000 bond at the time of the shooting.
