One final curtain call for band director

MILAN Generations of students have felt the effects of Nick Georgiafandis' teaching through the years, and upon his retirement they are still passionate.

"He was very easy going ... easy to get along with. You just loved music because of him," said Lisa Westcott, a 1978 Edison graduate. Westcott's brother, husband, and two daughters also were graduates of Edison and students of Georgiafandis.

Westcott said it's "family tradition."

Edison High School's band has a strong reputation around the area. Westcott said that Edison "owes a lot to him for putting our program together." Edison High School's band has been participating in trips since Georgiafandis first took them to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. in 1986. He had them involved in the community, playing not only at sporting events and concerts but also at festivals, parades and nursing homes.

Georgiafandis' style set Edison apart from other bands. "He always called us a show band. We're there to entertain the crowd ... we had fun doing that," Westcott said.

Georgiafandis directed at Edison for 36 years, teaching marching band, show choir and stage band.

In honor of his retirement, an open house will be take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the school. Everyone is invited and there is no cost.

There will be a toast and roast at 6 p.m.

It is estimated that anywhere from 300 to 500 people will be in attendance, with some former students coming from out of state.

To RSVP, e-mail Denise Reilly at dreilly@berlin-milan.org.

Food and monetary donations are still needed to help defer costs.

Food donations can be brought to the party but RSVP ahead of time with Lisa Westcott at (419) 588-2822. Other donations should be sent to "The Edison Music Boosters" at Edison High School, 2603 Ohio 113 E., Milan, Ohio 44846.

Lisa Westcott (...

In the article "One Final Curtain Call for Band Director," I just wanted to add that my sister Diane and also my sister in laws, Karen & Lori also had Mr. G for their band/choir director and I just wanted to acknowledge that. It really is a family tradition and Mr. G will truly be missed. For all the alumni that may read this article - please try to attend Nick's retirement party. This is our one last blast with him and we are putting together a scrapbook and will be taking lots of pictures!

See you all at the party!

He Will be greatly missed in more ways than he or anyone else could dream!!!
