A Willard teenager being tried as an adult on an allegation he shot his mother in the back has pleaded "not guilty by reason of insanity."

Michael E. Mason, 17, of 23 N. Main St., is charged with attempted murder in connection with shooting his mother May 30. The defendant fled the scene, which caused an extensive manhunt and forced Willard City Schools to be on lockdown. Mason eventually was arrested in the 500 block of Pearl Street. He remains incarcerated at the Seneca County Youth Center.

The boy's mother, Melissa, was taken to Mercy Willard Hospital and later transferred to a Toledo hospital. She was later released. She was in Huron County Common Pleas Court for Thursday's hearing.

"She wasn't there to support (her son), but to see what would happen," said Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler, who also mentioned Mason's mother is upset with her son.

"She's afraid I'm going to give it (the case) away. She's quite upset about what happened."

A story about the case, including details about the latest hearing, was published in Saturday's Reflector.
