Huron County has completed a strong year in the sales tax collection department.

Auditor Roland Tkach's year-end numbers showed about $8.41 million in sales tax was collected in 2012 -- about $310,000 more than the previous year.

A story about the numbers was published in Friday's Reflector.

Wanna increase sales tax revenue, create jobs and expand commerce?

The State needs to expand liquor licenses.

One liquor store in a city the size of Norwalk and none in other Huron Co. municipalities is a remnant of backwards 1930s end of Prohibition era thinking.

Paranoid Illusion

Less booze because of more heroin and prescription drug abuse.

Whitebuffalo

Unfortunately, that was what I was thinking too!! We've gone from worrying about people drinking and smoking to people using pills and needles!! Good grief!

Swamp Fox

Their is state liquor stores in Willard, Arnolds Carry Out , Huron Co. side of Bellevue, Bellevue Beer Dock on Harrison Street, three in Huron County, just about right for the population that the state sets.

Contango

One aisle tucked inside a grocery store for a city with the population size of Norwalk is a gross disservice.

A monopoly of that dimension smacks of financial kickbacks to the state by the liquor interests in order to keep prices artificially high by limiting competition.

The state 'finally' allowed a whole four casinos! Maybe they'll expand liquor package sale licenses in the 22nd Century!

Backward. Little wonder that OH is losing population.

Swamp Fox

Zippy for god sakes you would complain about fresh air, most of the liquor stores are "tucked in" another retailer, none in this immediate area are freestanding, keeps the overhead lower. Yea, I know in Chicago and everyplace else you lived it was better, I wouldn't live in a place so terrible if I were you.....

"Sacks"? So God supports more package stores? I agree. :)

So other than merely endorsing out-of-date backward thinking, do you have one iota of an "intelligent" idea for increasing sales tax revenue Egg Nog?

Swamp Fox

zippy is it that difficult to be as perfect as you think you are. Did you read the article or just the headline? Sales tax receipt increased by $310,000, I know the large print is easier for you...

Contango

And did you read the actual article or just the above abbreviated web version Egg Nog?

So other than simpleton blather, got any ideas?

Swamp Fox

zippy since you were wrong as usual from the beginning, example only one liquor store in Huron County. In closing you are the prime example of "Don’t argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." So touche, you have beat me with your experience..........

@ Swamp Thing:

Nice double post. :)

Allow me to slightly edit my original statement for your clarification:

"One liquor store in a city the size of Norwalk and none in (some) other Huron Co. municipalities is a remnant of backwards 1930s end of Prohibition era thinking."

Where are the liquor stores in: New London, Greenwich, Monroeville?

For Erie Co, where's the one in Milan?

So other than mindless bitchin', ya still got nothin' huh?

Swamp Thing writes:

"Their is state liquor stores in Willard,"

"Their"? "Sacks"? Good to know that I'm trying to communicate with an illiterate.

So you're OK with letting the state decide that three liquor stores in Huron Co. is the proper number?

How about letting Huron Co. and/or the municipalities decide what the number should be?

Swamp Fox

zippy; State liquor stores are based on county population, you do realize liquor licensing is the responsibility of the state, or did you doze off in 8th grade goverment class? Want more liquor stores increase the population, as usual your argument has nothing, much like you...

Contango

@ Swamp Rat:

So in your pea brain, OH is the center of universal thinking in regards to liquor licensing eh?

Wash, rinse and repeat: "So other than mindless bitchin', ya still got nothin' huh?"

Swamp Fox

Nice come back zippy, no facts, just your mindless rants......

Contango

@ Swamp Rag:

The question was: What ideas do you have for increasing tax revenue?

Other than drivel you've produced nothing.

Swamp Fox

zippy since you seem very exhausted and frustrated, I am dropping it and looking forward to celebrating Christmas. I am also sorry I brought up your 8th grade education, I realize they were 4 difficult years for you.
I truly hope the staff allows you visitors during the holidays......

Contango

@ Swamp Water:

No need to repeat. I got it a while ago: No ideas from you, just bitchin'.

Cliff Cannon

@ Contango : Long time,no debate. Here's hoping you get scotch in your Christmas stocking.

P.S. Merry Christmas to you and yours

Contango

@ CC:

Had a great Christmas thank you!

And a Happy New Year to you and yours.

Well, now that the fears connected to the Mayan calendar and end of the world have subsided, I've heard that a new one is upon us.

Apparently a reading of the eschatological writings of the extinct Hittite civilization reveals that the final days will occur when the Browns win four consecutive Super Bowls.

Cliff Cannon

@ Contango : I truly believe in the Hittite revelation. So,considering how well the Browns draft. I shall start making plans for my great-great-great-great-great..... grandchildren to perish after that 4th. Super Bowl victory :)

Happy New Year to you and yours

There is only one liquor store in Bellevue and it isn't in Huron County.

brutalyhonest

How stupid to think that only liquor stores create "Tax revenues". If you want to create increased sales tax revenues, make the cheaters stop cheating. There are business's out there (retail, convienience)) which buy products that are taxable, such as pop, beer, cigarettes, that are NEVER reported. Audit Invoices to sales....you will see a giant gap in sales tax reported.

Contango

@ brutalyhonest:

If you do indeed have credible info regarding these "tax cheats," then IMO I would contact Mr. Tkach's office ASAP.

IMO, the state allowing for an increase in the number of liquor package stores would be a potential addition to local sales tax revenue, NOT a panacea.

Swamp Fox

For those who "think" that more liquor stores would increase the tax revenue, that will only occur with increased sale of liquor. Is that what we want? When more alcohol is consumed, the possibility of abuse increases, with the resulting substance abuse, health related problems, reduction of productivity in the workplace, DUI's, and alcohol related domestic problems, what will that cost the taxpayers and society? The latest statistics from the CDC was $224 billion for alcohol abuse, that equals $746 per year from every person in the U.S., then consider the emotional toll on society.

"The federal and state excise tax on beer is $1.73 per case.

"This tax generates a large amount of revenue for the federal and state coffers, so every time you buy a case of beer, you are generating tax revenue and helping the economy."

- John Hipp, Maple City Ice vice president.

Better go bitch at Maple City Ice, they're obviously contributing to the degradation of society.

Still no ideas, just bitchin'. :)

I don't know how I got your panties in such a bunch, but I sure do enjoy playin' with ya. :)
