A Wakeman woman was killed Friday in a Brownhelm Township motorcycle accident. The driver remains hospitalized.

The passenger, Tara M. Redmond, 22, of 13512 Florence Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Vermilion Road crash. Dispatcher Jennifer Hovinetz of the state Highway Patrol's Elyria post said Redmond and the driver, Jody L. McKinney, 32, of Vermilion, were not wearing their helmets when they were ejected from the bike into a wooded area.

"He has not been charged with anything because he's still in the hospital," Hovinetz said of McKinney.

A spokeswoman for Lorain Community Health Partners Hospital in Elyria said she is not permitted to disclose patient conditions. McKinney declined to comment.

McKinney was heading north on Vermilion Road when he lost control on a curve, hit the roadway, went off the right side and hit a tree, troopers said. He was taken to Lorain Community Health Partners from the scene.

Hovinetz said McKinney was listed in fair condition as of Sunday.

Troopers suspect alcohol of being a factor because troopers smelled it on McKinney, she said. Blood results are pending.
