A man convicted of moving a safe from the home of his now estranged girlfriend's late great-grandmother must pay almost $918 in restitution.

Bryan N. Jordan, 20, of 230 Sandusky St., Plymouth, will be in the Huron County Jail for about another six days. As part of his three years of probation, he is prohibited from having any association with his ex-girlfriend's aunt or be on the premises of a Norwood Avenue address.

Jordan, in late October, pleaded guilty to safecracking. He admitted to breaking into the Norwalk residence of Zoe M. Knott's late great-grandmother with Knott and stealing a safe Aug. 18 that ended up in Jordan's truck. He and Knott, 19, were homeless at the time and living together in a car.

Attorneys and Jordan, who plans on seeking full-time employment, agreed the offense was a crime of opportunity.

"Once he got into it, he was very eager," Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said.

Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway credited Jordan with being in jail for 114 days. The judge sentenced him Tuesday to a total of 120 days behind bars; Conway imposed no fine.

"The incident happened when he (Jordan) and his girlfriend were definitely down on their luck," Huron County Public Defender David Longo said.

Longo further described the offense as a "property crime" at a vacant house.

"When a person passes away, it's not good to take advantage of that, but I think that goes more to the co-defendant," he said.

Knott pleaded guilty Nov. 9 -- her 19th birthday -- to an amended charge of attempted burglary. In a plea deal, Leffler agreed to dismiss one count each of theft and safecracking. Knott could face six to 18 months in jail when she is sentenced Dec. 19.

I am confused, you can break into a home, steal a safe and get probation but get caught with a smoke and go to jail. Why are they homeless?I use to wait in the parking lot at JFS and see 42 Mexican's get out of a small cap pickup and all go in and come out smiling.Something is screwed up here!

finally free

Ok I totally understand that everyone has a right to their own opinion and to speak/write it, but, wth does you sitting outside, stalking JFS and Mexicans have to do with these ppl stealing from the deceased?????
