Council member must withdraw or file as write-in candidate

What a difference a signature makes.

Norwalk City Council-at-large member Dwight Tkach didn't sign the circulator statement on the back of his nominating petition. That means Tkach, on council for the last six years, must either withdraw from being an independent candidate before June 27 or withdraw and then file as a write-in candidate by Sept. 7.

"It was just an oversight," said Tkach, who is not sure what he plans to do. "It's pretty ironic. I was the biggest vote-getter the last two years."

Tkach had obtained about 70 signatures when he turned in the paperwork June 7, the day of the deadline. He needed 50 names.

The Huron County Board of Elections will be sending Tkach a letter advising him of his options and notifying him of the June 27 meeting to certify the independent candidates. Skip Wilde and Stan Obrenovich are the other at-large council independent candidates.

Director Tom Gerrity said the board will be checking that the signed voters match with their current addresses.

"The board will meet to figure out what to do with the petitions," he said.

Gerrity, who has been with the board less than three years, said mistakes like Tkach's are common. He heard of similar incidents during the November election in surrounding counties.

"They said it happens every once in a while," he added.

To make a bad week worse, Tkach broke his wrist Monday in a bicycling incident with Wilde and Jay Ewell.

"They stopped. I didn't," said Tkach, who went over the handlebars. "I decided to get really serious about working out. ...I wish there was a better story."

He expects to be in a cast for the next six weeks.
