Norwalk Municipal Court Judge John Ridge will retire effective Dec. 31.

Ridge told the Reflector about his decision on Monday morning, shortly after informing his staff.

Ridge is in the second year of his fifth six-year term. He said when he ran the last time, he expected to finish out his term, but changes in the retirement rules forced his hand.

A story about Ridge's retirement was published on the front page of Monday's Reflector.

why did you have to appear before the judge? was it a DUI? Judge Ridge has always been a good and fair judge. Sorry to see him go.

Enjoy your retirement Judge Ridge, and thank you for your service. I only ever heard that he rules fairly, and justly. I have to agree with Swiss-it wouldn't be a bad thing for Judge "let em off easy" Conway to retire also.

Good riddance...ridge knows he's got a modern day debtors prison going on in Norwalk anyway. Repeatedly Sentencing people to jail simply because they can't afford the fines and court costs that accumulate if the person is unable to pay. The time a person is in jail is supposed to count toward their fines. Poverty is not a crime Ridge. Maybe norwalk could clear up a lot of those warrants if they let people do community service or count jail time.

KURTje

Go! As a juror NOT impressed by his actions or attitude. Military service would have educated him. Hope his appointed replacement is ok.

Swamp Fox

If you have the cash to buy the booze and pot, you should have the cash to pay the fine. Judge Ridge doesn't need defended his record speaks for its self and was well respected throughout the criminal justice system. Sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it. If you want a feel good, I am everyone's buddy judge look at Sandusky and the results.

Delazia

Not every person that has been fined and jailed repeatedly because they couldn't pay the required amount uses drugs and alcohol. It's about poverty and lack of resources.

Swamp Fox

If you have time to get in trouble, expect to pay the price, take any JOB available, and don't tell me there aren't any. Many service related jobs go unfilled for lack of applicants, don't expect to start out as a CEO, unless you enjoy the welfare train ride..... Its call PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTY........

Delazia

Many of these people have low wage jobs and have to choose between paying their rent and taking care of their families or paying a large amount of their income for fines. Also it might be hard to keep a job if the person is homeless because they chose to pay the fine instead of rent. If the person paid the rent instead, then they would have a warrant issued...they would lose that low wage job there too. Nothing you can say can justify throwing people in jail repeatedly for not having money. It's wrong. Judge ridge knows its wrong. Alot of those people are fined for minor crimes like traffic offenses. Community service or counting jail time toward legal fees would change all of that. I have heard of people serving 10 days in jail each time they miss a payment. What if everyone was arrested each time they couldn't pay a bill?

Yall Make Me Sick

You've done a great job Judge Ridge. Now it's time to really enjoy your family! Congrats!

Yall Make Me Sick

Only ones complaining are the ones he has busted cause they've chose to break the law. Get over yourselves!

ferball14

A trooper gave me a speeding ticket, i fought it in ridges court room with no lawyer and ridge ended up siding with me and threw the ticket out. Yup I'm pretty sure he is unfair!!!

This will be a big loss for the City of Norwalk and Huron County. Enjoy retirement Your Honor.

Swamp Fox

So only if you work every day you should pay your fines, otherwise its unfair. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Its called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTY!

Have a Great time and enjoy your freedom that you earned. to everyone that has something bad to say must be a life loser. i have been a local frequent flier he has always been more then fair on jail time and also fines. im not saying i enjoy either of them but like i said if your not a LIFE LOSER he was a great judge and had a job to do.he did his job to the best of his ability. and to the drinking and driving, if you took the time to go to school and run for judge then you might have been able to get away with it too.but i have never known a perfect person or person that has made the best choice all the time and every person on earth has gone to work a lkittle hung over.

Delazia

It's easy to call people names and still not address the point. If a person is constantly being thrown in jail for not having money then, of course they would be a "frequent flyer" in ridge's court room. That's my point. That's why I said repeatedly. But it's not for a new crime. And if by LIFE LOSER you mean living in poverty and working a low wage job then once again you're supporting my point.

Richard Cranium

Judge Ridge is a fair and honest judge and has served the community well. For those of you who are complaining about fines and cost, don't get into trouble and you won't have that problem. Again, thank you for your service Judge Ridge and enjoy your retirement!!!

Delazia

Attempting to Justify jailing the poor repeatedly by saying they should have never gotten into trouble is ridiculous. If they have served their time and spent additional time in jail for their inability to pay then those additional days should count toward their debt. Ridge may have served the wealthy members of the community well but what he has done to the people struggling to make a living is a shame. Wealthy people get into legal trouble too. They just have the resources to get out of it.

I think it is a "win/win" situation.... Judge ridge is retiring, so good for him, and Norwalk will get another Judge.. which is a win too... I just hope that whoever takes his place is Not out of touch, and does Not feel self righteous and all knowing... we have too many of those here now..I still say that I think it is unethical, for one judge to change or overrule, what another Judge has decreed...enjoy your Retirement Judge Ridge, I think Norwalk will as well..

Cliff Cannon

Judge Ridge:Norwalk is a better place because you served. Thanks for doing a fantastic job. Then, here's hoping, you change your mind and make a comeback to where you so are badly needed---the bench

Swamp Fox

swiss family says "Not out of touch, and does Not feel self righteous and all knowing." There is the image in the mirrior....

Another gem, "I still say that I think it is unethical, for one judge to change or overrule, what another Judge has decreed." So much for the right of appeal and review in his perfect world according to him..

swiss family

yes "Fox" I can see that when you are looking in that mirror that you do see, "out of touch, self righteous, and being all knowing" but I wasn't talking about you...as for being unethical for one judge to over ride another judge.. I know that most TV shows are just that.. but there are enough real court shows to have heard a thousand times nearly all of the judges say that they will NOT over ride what another Judge has put in place... and yet our local judges seem to have no problem in believing that they can do that...In a perfect America, everyone would have the time, and money and resources to appeal an injustice.. but try to see if a lawyer will help in an appeal, and you would quickly see that in a small town like this, where all lawyers seem to be closely associated with each other, and eat lunch together at times, and even meet up at the same clubs, it is difficult to find one that will make the necessary "Waves" that the law demands of them...If you can find one, then you have to have cash up front.. .. that is NOT how JUSTICE is supposed to be... it would make the most sense to keep it to where no judge can over ride another... which has not always happened here.... Good.......... Bye... Judge Ridge...enjoy your time away from the law... I know others who will as well.. Oh and before you go into your rant about TV judges being just that.... do your research, they are real judges with real cases,, and most of them have been in law far longer than any of our local judges....
