Council salaries in Norwalk could jump in 2014

For the past 25 years, Norwalk city council members' salaries haven't changed.

But this could change in 2014, as Ohio's Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) has instituted minimum requirement changes that will take effect in 2013.

The change would not affect city council members until 2014 because they can't receive a change in pay during a term.

Presently, city council members earn $250 per month or $3,000 annually. That is the minimum amount they can earn and still receive a full year's PERS credit.

Finance Director Diane Eschen said that minimum earning amount will change to $600 per month or $7,200 a year.

A story about this subject was published in the Reflector.

I thought council was part time, why do they need to earn a full years credit?

Complaints voiced by the Svc. Director about a reduction in city income tax receipts as well as reduced State revenue sharing to be followed by an increase in city bureaucrat salaries?

Pay 'em more (plus bennies) when ya got less coming in?

Solution: Just go pick off a few more leaves from the Norwalk money tree orchard.
