COLLINS - Doug Solet is Western Reserve's new superintendent. He officially was hired Monday.

Solet, 39, said he applied for the position at Western because he grew up in Elyria and was familiar with the area.

Presently principal at Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic, Solet earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Baldwin-Wallace College and his superintendent certification from Ashland University.

Now completing his third year at Central Catholic, he previously taught at John Marshall High School in Cleveland, Sylvan Educational Solutions in Baltimore, Put-In-Bay Local School and Elyria High School.

He was impressed with the way the community supported the school and also with the academic success the students attained and adds, "I felt this would be a good fit."

Board member Dale Daniels said the board interviewed six finalists for the position, any of whom could have done the job. They picked Solet because of his background in curriculum, his communication skills and his interest in being visible in the community, Daniels said.

Board President Cheryl Fannin was unable to attend the meeting but in a letter to fellow members said, "I wholeheartedly support the selection of Doug Solet as our next superintendent. I am confident that Mr. Solet will provide the necessary leadership that will continue to move Western Reserve forward."

Solet was given a three-year contract, effective Aug. 1 at an annual salary of $74,500. He also will work several days in July with outgoing Superintendent Don Barnes, who is resigning Aug. 3 because of family concerns.

Solet lives in Elyria with his wife, Sara, a speech and language pathologist with the Cleveland Municipal Schools. They have a daughter who attends Clearview Local Schools. He enjoys boating and riding motorcycles.

concerned citiz...

The hiring of Doug Solet as superintendent of Western Reserve Local Schools is a prime example that no one on the board of education at Western Reserve knows what they are doing. Do you have any idea of this man's track record? Ask any veteran teacher from Elyria Schools and they will look at you with utter disbelief that any school system would hire this man. Solet will be the next "Patsy" of this school board, doing exactly what certain members of the school board want and collecting a paycheck for it. Western should have done some checking up on this one, because it will come back to bite them, well, in their backside. A bad decision in a line of bad decisions lately by the school board. At least the school board thinks that sports are more important than a quality education, way to go Western Reverse.
