A Castalia man faces more than 30 felonies on allegations he raped two young female relatives.

Victor J. Veliz, 39, was in Huron County Common Pleas Court to answer to a 35-count secret indictment Monday. He is charged with 15 counts of sexual battery, which are second- and third-degree felonies, 11 third-degree felony counts of gross sexual imposition and nine charges of rape, a first-degree felony.

"My client pleads not guilty to all the allegations in the indictment. ... He intends to fight these charges," defense attorney Thomas DeBacco said.

Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said one of the victims is now 15 and Veliz reportedly had "full sexual conduct" with her. He said the 11 gross sexual imposition charges cover suspected offenses involving the other girl who is now 13 which happened through as late as September.

"The state feels these are serious charges," said Leffler, who recommended a $125,000 bond.

DeBacco, when addressing bond, said Veliz "had all the opportunity to flee, but he did not" even though he knew the charges were coming more than a month ago.

Judge Jim Conway imposed a $100,000 bond and prohibited Veliz from having any association with the two suspected victims and from being on any properties where they might be.

Veliz could face life in prison on the six rape charges, first-degree felonies, which cover suspected offenses involving the two girls. His trial is scheduled for Jan. 15.

"iamrevolutionary"....I agree 100% unfortunately this is Huron county.. we have a lazy prosecutor,a "questionable" Judge, well judgeS...and a stronger defense team...EVERY case here is whittled down to minor crimes.. and a shameful look from the Judge, and if he is feeling really badas$ he will put them on "INTENSE.probation and maybe send them off to a rehab house as a vacation..... Man I wish we had some lawyers who were ambitious enough to run against these "Inept" representatives who are supposed to be there to find "Justice"in my opinion

Death Penalty! Save the $$

Bullet to brain. I'll buy the bullet.

Paranoid Illusion

So basically by pleading innocent he is accusing these young victims of lying. This in turn will lead to a jury trial, further traumatizing the victims. This guy must not believe that a hell exists. For now.

Sarrak

Most people at the start of a case enter a plea of "not guilty" which says to the government : "prove it". "Innocent" is a plea that doesn't exist. After examination of the evidence provided by the government changes in that plea frequently occur.

Paranoid Illusion

Sarrak - I am well aware of how our justice system works. Perhaps if you had read the article, you would have seen that his attorney boldly stated: "He intends to fight these charges." Sounds like he is trying to say he is "not guilty," which is a synonym for "innocent." Bazinga!

Sarrak

Not guilty is not a synonym for innocent. Innocent means someone didn't do it. Not guilty means not proven. There is a huge difference. OJ Simpson was found not guilty - Do you think he was innocent?

Paranoid Illusion

OJ was neither innocent nor not guilty. You can stop chasing your tail now. The point was that this guy's attorney said he will fight the charges, which implies that he views the charges as false. You don't fight the truth, you run from it.

Semantics. Just because OJ was "found" not guilty does not mean he was and is not "guilty" of a crime he is obviously not innocent of. You missed the point - that this guy's attorney stated he plans to "fight" the charges, implying that he believes he is innocent. Either way you look at it, the victims will be re-traumatized in the process. If he did this and he cares anything about the victims, he will plead guilty so as not to be "guilty" of re-victimizing them.

I'm going to become a defense attorney in Huron County...you never lose!

Paranoid Illusion

Ironic: Losers that never lose!

If ANY of you were around in the 70's when Russ was just getting out of law school, you may remember he started as an unbathing, nail biting, wrinkled clothes wearing PUBLIC DEFENDER!! Swiss has the lazy comment correct! Judge can only follow the laws as written. As for the accused pervert, I'm thinking he did do just what the girls said he did. RARELY do these kids lie.

iamrevolutionary

Yes, I was around then....You described him perfectly, but left out the dandruff! LOL! :-) Lazy is not strong enough to describe him! Acted and looked as if he just rolled out of bed to show up late...and others looked up points of law for him...he couldn't be bothered.

Love how you are all quick to judge, what if this man is innocent? what if these girls are just mad or have a problem with him and his familY? I do believe if he is guilty he deserves his punishment but however there is a chance he is innocent!!!

BaileyOriginally

You're absolutely right. I bet that little 10-year-old vindictive whore is only out to get him! Seriously?? Did you even THINK before you commented? How many counts of this is he charged?

Paranoid Illusion

Thank you for proving once again that some "optimists" are really just naive.

No JUAN like this deserves to be alive..

I am not saying that he is innocent!! Read it right before you comment also. I am saying we are all quick to judge. And in the world we live in I do believe there are children who are vindictive who have cruel ways of thinking. And if you would read my comment appriopriately you would see were I said if he is guilty do whatever possible to convict him. But there is a reason he is pleading Innocent instead of no contest. Get a life I see how you comment on almost all these articles which tells me you have nothing better to do!

You talking to me? My comments on all these articles? Perhaps you have me confused with someone else. I've made like 4 comments in the past 3 months.

Paranoid Illusion

Optimistic/naive - your judgmental comment invited rebuttal with your sarcastic "love" of the way others comments were judgemental. Stories like this elicit strong opinions and reactions for many different reasons. If it was your kids, would you be so patient and understanding? I bet not. Deal with it.
