Among electric cooperatives, there is a time honored tradition of giving.

From the dawn of the electric cooperative movement, it was all about neighbors helping neighbors. Nothing has changed in that respect. In fact, electric cooperatives have only become more creative in identifying ways for their members and themselves to give back to their communities.

Firelands Electric Cooperative has joined forces with local radio stations WLKR-FM and K96-FM to support the USO of Northern Ohio. Firelands Electric is one of several donation locations, where members of the community can fill USO donation boxes with non-perishable care package items that will be sent overseas to men and women serving in uniform.

"This is our fifth year collecting for the USO of Northern Ohio, and I am thrilled by the support from our community and employees," says April Bordas, Firelands' general manager. "I hope the care packages filled with comfort items from home will let our troops know that we appreciate what they are doing."

Care package items can be dropped off before Friday, Dec. 14, to Firelands' office facility (1 Energy Place, New London) during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional information and a printable donation list is available on Firelands' website -- www.FirelandsEC.com.

The USO of Northern Ohio is a registered 501c 3 non-profit with Gordon Food Service (GFS), and during the check-out process at GFS, the clerk will ask, "Are you shopping for a non-profit?" If you say, "Yes, the USO of Northern Ohio!" a rebate check will be sent at the end of the year, up to 7 percent of the total purchases made for the year.

All donations are fully tax deductible. The USO is a non-profit organization, solely supported through the generosity of the citizens, organizations, and corporations of Northern Ohio. It receives no government funds.

Monetary donations to the USO can be made by check, payable to USO of Northern Ohio and mailed to USO at 20637 Emerald Parkway, Cleveland, Ohio 44135. Visit the USO of Northern Ohio website (www.usocleveland.org) to discover ways to donate.

Firelands Electric, A Touchstone Energy Partner, is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative providing electric service to about 9,000 homes and businesses in rural areas of Ashland, Huron, Lorain and Richland counties.
