No school Thursday in Norwalk

Norwalk City Schools won't be holding any classes Thursday due to the amount of community members going to the state semifinals in volleyball.

Because of the many fans (students, staff and community) heading to Dayton on Thursday for the state semifinals in volleyball, Norwalk City Schools will not hold classes in the district. The school day will be made up at a later date – to be determined by the school board.

Norwalk defeated Parma Padua in five games Saturday afternoon in the Div. II regional volleyball final match at Ontario High School. (The scores of the games were: 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-10.)  Norwalk advances to the state semifinals at noon Thursday at the Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University.

"We are proud of our volleyball team and the tremendous support from our super fans. Good luck to all as they head to Dayton in a quest for a state championship. Go Truckers!" said superintendent Dennis Doughty.

@Truant.....Again, not a kid. So who are you going to get mad at when the school has to cancel anywhere from 3-5 days of school each year because of the winter weather? Im sure mother nature has a hotline somewhere....let me find it....

The Truant Officer

Dr. Info - Earlier you were trying to compare Martin Luther King to volleyball and now you're attempting to compare inclement weather with volleyball. How in the world can't you see none of them are related? By the way, that was real classy earlier bringing up Obama. I never vote for liberals.

Dr. Information

But its all about the kids right. I mean you are the one who said KIDS BELONG IN SCHOOL. Weather shouldn't be an excuse. Leave an hour earlier and drive slow.

OHIOHOOSIER76

If you ask me what the real flaw is here, it lies with the OHSAA. There is no reason why they cannot play the semi-final games for the 4 divisions between Friday Night - All Day Saturday, then play the Finals on Sunday. I know it is comparing apples to oranges, but in Indiana, they have 5 classes of Football, they play the championship games on Friday (I, II) and Saturday (III, IV, V) of Thanksgiving weekend. It works!

My point above is not that kids should not be able to show school spirit by attending the game, but the fact that the game is played during the school day.

This all being said, Good Luck Lady Truckers! You have already made us proud!

Most Wanted

Congratulations Lady Truckers, kick butt! All those attending drive safe, cheer loud and have a great time! All those staying home, sleep in and enjoy your day off! All those whining about it, don't worry, tomorrow will bring you something else to whine about you big party poopers!

The Truant Officer

@ most wanted - You don't even live in our school district, so it's not your property taxes being wasted, so stay out of it.

Dr. Information

@Officer.....wow, nice come back. Explain how taxes are being wasted. This should be good.

Most Wanted

@ Truant Officer........So I can't wish a group of girls who worked hard good luck? LOL, I guess you are one of the whinny ass'...who thinks he owns a newspaper!

sport24728

Wow, you are just bitter. I actually feel sorry for you, and the fact that you need to take out your frustrations on a bunch of HS girls and their success. How much do you pay per year to the Norwalk City School district through your property taxes? And don't lie. Post the exact number on this website. And then divide that number by 180 schools days per year. See that number? Yes, that insignificant numbers. THAT'S the number that drives you to get on a message board and act like a fool. Pathetic! Go Truckers!

Dr. Information

@OhioHoosier......You can't play games on Sunday because of CHURCH. Nobody in any sport has ever played a sanctioned game on Sunday. Depending on where you live, Dayton could be a 3-5 hour bus ride. You cannot pack all the games in on a Friday night, there is not enough time to get all the teams down there and play, unless you want them to be playing till 3 in the morning.

Do you think the OHSAA has ever tried to come up with other plans....and none of them work? I know someone who worked with tournaments for years....you can't jam pack them all in on one day, its impossible and not fair to the students. So what, they miss a day to play in a state tournament game. Big deal. You guys at like these kids are on the brink of flunking by missing a day, which btw will be made up later down the road. Damn broken records some of you are.

cari419

I personally think everyone is blowing this way out of proportion. It's not that big of a deal. I keep seeing comments "what about the students that want to be at school" If you polled the students I bet you wouldn't find 10 that would rather be at school. So they are taking a day off to be made up later. So what!? Big deal, it's not going to cost any money it's cancelling itself out. I think it's a great idea to cancel so the kids, parents, teachers and fans can support the girls. It's a big accomplishment and NORWALK as a whole should be proud. Sometimes I think people just want something to whine and complain about. GO LADY TRUCKERS!!

GottaloveNorwalk

Mine just got home from school and said what a joke, we have no school Thursday so the TEACHERS can go watch the volleyball game. Do you think the elementary kids really know what is going on with a high school sport?

sport24728

Well mine just got home and they were excited because Mrs. K's team is going to State! And they were even more excited when I told them we could go watch. Go Truckers!

apatrick44

absolutely the elementary students know what's going on...my daughter walked up to coach K yesterday and told her "Good Luck to you and your team coach K...my mom is taking me, my sister and some of her friends to Dayton. We will be in the stands cheering you on." My daughter is 8 and can't wait to watch this wonderful group of girls represent Norwalk. Even if school wasn't cancelled...we would go! Go Truckers!

GottaloveNorwalk

That is my point, the people who wanted to go to the game should keep their kids home ( that is the parent's choice for them to miss school) Not everyone needs to miss a day off we should have been given the right to go watch or not, if the kids decide to go watch then let it be an excuse absence.

apatrick44

my point was that the kids DO know what is going on...when they aren't sheltered and are encourged to be active in school functions. This also about the staff...many of them are parents of girls playing and many of them have been involved in the lives of these ladies for many years. Not sure how most people see their kids, but my children are first priority and if my job wouldn't allow me to watch my child compete at the state level, I'd find another job with someone that gets it.

Typical blogger cowardice. Make an inflammatory comment, then run for the hills of anonymity. Just because you're name isn't on a comment doesn't mean you don't own it.

On the other hand, I'm waiting for all the anti-labor zealots out there who bash the labor movement to surrender their Labor Day holidays and show up for work on the first Monday of every September. Never happen.

Dr. Information

? blogger cowardice ? How about blogger common sense because many on here do not have it. Good luck Truckers. I hope they call Friday off too, might as well.

perfectly_flawed

Congrats and best of luck Lady Truckers! I AM a taxpayer in Norwalk, NO kids in the district and WILL be voting 'yes' tomorrow.

common_sense

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY! C'MON NEED THAT DAY OFF TOO. GOING TO BE DOWN THERE ANYWAY. GO NORWALK VOLLEYBALL!

Penthouse

It may not be a national holiday, but it is a reason for Norwalk to celebrate. Have some pride! School is more than what happens in the classroom. Good Luck NHS!! What a great accomplishment!!

Dr. Information

@penthouse....very well said. One would think that everyone would be supportive, but in todays society, if you ain't complaining, you ain't living.

Penthouse

I find people's attitudes very sad. I don't understand why people can't be happy for others. I guess it is easier to spoil someones happiness than find their own. Once again GOOD LUCK NORWALK HIGH SCHOOL!! Be proud!

CAST THE FIRST STONE

it will end up put on a snow day and then the snow days will get extended again. Nice move on the day of the school levy vote. All the yes votes will be out of town

OHIOHOOSIER76

huh? we vote tomorrow, the game is on thursday

sport24728

You should really learn how to read a calendar. Election day is 11/6 (Tuesday) and the game is 11/8 (Thursday). So not only do we get to watch the girls at State, we also get to vote YES on the levy.

rickross2

I think its great that they are cancelling school for this. Other area schools have done the same when they are competing for state, it makes everyone feel like they are part of the action. And to those of you who think its unfair to the kids that dont want to go, get real! No kid will say "You know what, I'd rather go to school than hang out at home" Its a good deal all the way around

indytrucker

Go Truckers. Hats off to Mr Doughty for having the good sense to close school for the day.

cornholio

I thought they were student athletes, meaning academics first and sports afterwards? Go Norwalk. So proud we live in a town where even the school can't get priorities straight.

cornholio

Where's the school cancellation for other sports that make it to state? Wonder what went on here.
