Joyce Garcia, the handicapped woman who parks on her lawn in Willard, has the sympathies of Huron County. Fully 57 percent of voters in the Reflector's online poll said Garcia should be allowed to park on her lawn.

Another 19 percent said they'd be happy to help Garcia get a wheelchair ramp either by donating time, money, or materials.

Twenty-four percent, on the other hand, said she should not be allowed to park on her lawn, either because "the rules are the rules," or because "her problem is of her own making."

Garcia has no cartilage in her knees, a result of her weight, which makes it next to impossible to walk from the car to her door.

If you let one resident do it, there will be more to follow. Willard is falling apart fast enough anyway!

well guess how my day went today. My son was home, so he brought my car up to the door to make it easier on me .Then I returned home and no one was here to help me up the steps .so I left my car in the driveway in fear of getting another violation paper.I tried to hurry and get my wheelchair out of the car,so I could get to the door but by the time I got my chair out and I sat down in my chair it was to late ,I had messed on my self. This isn't the first and won't be the last time this happens now if I set a potty chair out by my lawn near the drive is there gonna be a zoning violation on potty chairs on lawns.I'm not trying to be funny it's just a part of why I needed to be close to my front door. Thanks for listening.God Bless you all.

Trish there are a lot of other people that do it and they do not have the problems that she does.
May God help you that you never end up with these kind of problems.
Where is your compassion?

THERE IS SUCH A THING WHICH IS HARDSHIP CASES THIS IS ONE OF THEM DO ON TO OTHERS AS YOU WISH DOWN UNTO YOUR SELF ALL HARD SHIP CASES SHOULD BE WEIGH AS THEY ARE IF THEY MEET THE HARDSHIP THEN THERE SHOULD BE EXCEPTIONS MADE. JUST LOOK AT ALL THE HANDICAP STICKERS USED TO GET TO PARK CLOSED TO A STORE THEY JUST PULL THEM OUT FROM UNDER THERE SEAT. STICK THEM ON THERE WINDSHEILD AND WALK PERFECTLY WELL INTO A STORE. I THINK SHE SHOULD SUE THE CITY FOR CAUSING HER MORE HARDSHIP AND PAIN AND SUFFERING.

LET HER PARK IN FRONT OF HER HOUSE....AND A RAMP WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE FOR HER.

It seems that her weight is an issue! My mother is a heavy woman too.Honestly, all of us children realize that she will not go out of her way too much for anything! She has a ton of health problems. She parks close to her front door also, because she is lazy.Point blank! She hates to walk or get any activity in her life!It seems easier for these ladies like this just to sit &watch t.v.& take their scripts all day! Honey, you need a little excercise, you would be surprised how much better you will feel physically & emotionally!!!!!!!C'mon I have colon problems myself, my doc. doesn't tell me to remain Inactive! I need to get the benefits of moving around!!!!!!!!!!!As well as it sounds like you need to get moving around, instead of copping out!!God bless one and Everyone!!BOOHYAH!!!!!!!!!!!

That sounds kind of mean. Who knows why she is overweight? It could be genes, or maybe not. But at her age, it is probably too late to fix it no matter what caused it. When I get older, I'll probably be fat and have bad knees like the rest of the older people in my family. I hope people don't treat me like crap!

To Joyce if you are really having that much difficulty why not just give up the car and call for the county van to transport you its cheap and they have a wheelchair lift and can assist you with getting your purchases in to your home Its really not that big of a deal and I have to wonder if you really should be driving if you have that much problem with your knees I cant imagine that your reaction time would be very good in an emergency situation. Sorry but you really need to think about what is best for others sometimes instead of trying to keep something just so you can feed your own needs. Just a thought and suggestion, I feel you will do what ever you want regardless.

smalltowner how would calling them change the distance from the door to the driveway?! her reaction time is perfect, and in a car she is sitting so there is minimal pressure, so dont you think if she wasnt capable of driving then her doctor would not give her the handycapped sticker?! most of you people dont know what your saying. and by the way her wheight is from medical conditions mainly, not from being lazy or over endulgent. In fact her mother was in the same condition at about this time in her life, so whats that, a coinsadence, i highly doubt it. And why is this a major concern for this town, when there is a HUGE drug problem, immagration problem, bad cops, lack or affordable health care, vandalism, theft, voilance, lack of activities for the youth, etc etc...

dear speak;
I did think before I spoke and I stand by what I said. I don't believe her reaction time would be perfect, because I know that reaction times do go down with age and add to that the problems she has with her knees I don't see how you can say she has perfect reaction time I know that I have bad knees and somedays I have problems walking and that it would be easier to drive but I also realize if it hurts to walk than I should not be behind the wheel of a vehical that calls for me to use my knees to push the brake so unless her car has hand controls i think maybe you should think before you spout off

well considering i have and will continue to ride in her car, i know what i am saying when i say she has great reaction time.

TO SMALLTOWNER ,i give this lady credit for keeping on going, she seems to want to be independent as long as she can,I think its good she hasn't just given up and become a couch potato.she could just give up and quit, but it seems like she wants to be independent as long as she can .So those days you don't feel like driving stay home ,but give her credit for wanting to be independent as long as she can

smalltowner (An...

Just because I don't feel like driving does not mean that I just stay home and turn into a couch potato it just means that I walk to do what ever I have to do that day, no big deal. I don't have a problem with her wanting to be independent as long as possible but there are ways to do that with out all this hoopla. By the way did she ever go to the city council meeting as was suggested and ask for a variance, that seems to be a logical solution that could resolve this whole issue.By the way my own mother had to have knee replacement as did her sister, my mothers went very well my aunts did not , mostly do to the fact that one was motivated and the other was not, after the knee replacement my mother started walking more and has since lost over 100 lbs. and continues to walk everyday even though she has asthma and other ailments , so I too give her credit for her independence and I am not trying to pick on her or anyone else for that matter I am just stating my opinion. Just like you. It's called FREEDOM of SPEECH

Why not? She should be able to have the what she needs and when she needs it.
