Norwalk High School (NHS) is taking a proactive approach to responding to crises.
So far, 12 to 13 staff members have volunteered to be on a crisis response team, which will be trained to take the lead if a crisis were to arise.
"We got very good response from the staff," assistant principal Dan Bauman told the school board Tuesday.
On Monday, Capt. Rick Perry and other members of the Norwalk Fire Department trained staff members on using fire extinguishers. Norwalk Police Capt. Mike Conney will lead training for unarmed self-defense. There also will be defibrillator training.
Also, Bauman informed the board that EHOVE Career Center will be doing a presentation for sophomores soon. Sophomores will visit the Milan Township campus Nov. 27.
Pleasant Elementary Principal Janice Smith raved about the Fun Fest, the first time Pleasant, League and Maplehurst elementary schools have collaborated on the fundraiser. The event happened Saturday at Norwalk Middle School.
About 50 NHS students volunteered their time during an event Smith said was "three times more fun" when three schools are involved.
"It was just a sea of kids. ... (It was) just a positive experience for everyone," said Smith, who noted that students and parents from all three schools were glad to see everyone there.
In other news, the board:
** Received an update from Rod Thimke, president of the Norwalk Teachers Association, about the door-to-door campaign about the emergency operating levy on the Nov. 6 ballot. To be used for daily operating purposes, the levy would generate $1.85 million annually for Norwalk City Schools for five years.
Thimke said a lot of people are "cautiously optimistic" about the levy passing. Board president Janet Broz said board member John Lendrum and his wife have been helping with the campaign while Superintendent Dennis Doughty "has been out and about, beating the bushes."
** Accepted a donation of $99,140 from the Whitney Field Improvement Committee for refurbishing the football field sod and irrigation system.
** Approved NHS business teacher Jennifer Hohman to teach accounting online to six Monroeville High School students. The students are a part of one of Hohman's classes five days a week via Skype.
Doughty said there weren't enough Monroeville students for the school to have its own accounting class and this is a good way to collaborate resources. Monroeville Local Schools will reimburse Norwalk for the additional cost, which includes Hohman preparing online services.
** Approved an additional hour each day of tutoring time for special needs educational assistants Michelle Asbury and Linda Moreno due to the increased number of students needing tutoring in English as a second language. Doughty said the district had expected there to be 36 students, but there actually are 64 who need to be tutored.
** Approved an agreement to allow the Huron County commissioners put out a bid for a three-year lease of Norwalk's portion of the 45 acres of farm land across from NHS. The lease would be for agricultural purposes. Known as the "Shady Lane Farm," the school bought 20 acres from the commissioners about nine years ago. The county owns the remaining 25 acres.
