Silcox and Dunlap will face off for a Huron County commissioner seat in the Nov. 6 election.
In case you missed it live, you can watch the entire debate here. Just click on the video player below, underneath the advertisement.
By the way, didn't Silcox appoint his buddy Freeman to a county legal committee, and his county employee buddy Essex to the airport board to take over and bankrupt the facility. Be careful when you sling mud, it doesn't come back and hit you in the face. I'm tired of all the outright lies, shady dealing, and underhanded activities. A change is needed before the Larry and Gary combo totally bankrupt our county, or allow it to be taken over by the drug addicts.
To represent the county and its taxpayers, there is nothing wrong with appointing a NON AIRPLANE owner/pilot to the board, it was well overdue and needed.
Very interesting. I heard there were several other NON-AIRPLANE candidates who applied for that vacant seat on the Airport Board and they didn't even get an interview. WHY?
Dunlap isn't a commissioner YET so what kind of influence does he have that could be seen as unethical?
Dunlap wins this debate hands down. By the way, I've already voted for Tom with an absentee ballot.
Do you think Dunlap and Ward can work with Summit after supporting the airport cronies? As supporters of the airport they have already alienated one of Huron County's mega revenue sources!
"mega revenue sources" . . . LOL! From a SEASONAL business? Summit has already shut down for the year and won't re-open again until April - SIX MONTHS away. They only have TWO major events during the year when you can actually drive by the place and SEE fans sitting in those TEMPORARY stands. "Mega revenue source" my @$$!! I'm confident Dunlap and Ward will treat Summit FAIRLY and EQUALLY, just as every other business in this county . . . as it SHOULD be!
This post is as innaccurate as most of the other stuff you put on here. Even when Summit is shut down, which they aren't, they generate more revenue for the county than the airport has in 40 years. You still have your head in the sand or somewhere where the light doesn't get through.
roger - Than you for expressing your OPINION and for your feeble attempt at a personal attack. Please provide PROOF of how much revenue Summit actually generates for HURON COUNTY. Over 90 businesses have been documented as using the airport to PROVE that it is a valuable asset to the county. I have PROOF that the stands at Summit (which they claim as "temporary" so they don't have to pay property taxes on them) are EMPTY except during their two BIG events each year. I stop and take a photo each time I drive by . . . empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty . . .
If you want more of your tax money taken from other needed areas and going to the Sheriff's Department already bloated 4.5 million dollar budget than vote for Dunlap. Keep Silcox and Bauer to continue their watchful eye on our tax money!
"their watchful eye on our tax money" . . . Oh, this is the best one yet! You call spending $500 EACH on TWO picnic tables for a few county employees a "watchful eye"? How about wasting $7500 chasing after a pipe dream, or taking out a $520,000 LOAN when the county's general fund is almost BANKRUPT? Who is going to have to pay that loan back WITH INTEREST? I wouldn't even put Larry and Gary in charge of my children's lunch money. It's time to give the next team a chance to improve our county. Vote for DUNLAP and WARD!!
How about the BLOATED funding of the AG Extension office.
$300,000 overfunded and that is then kept by OSU.
If you want more of your tax money going to the airport and possibly losing Summit Mototsports than vote Dunlap.
FYI - The airport has received ZERO funds from the taxpayers in almost THREE years and it is still running IN THE BLACK despite all the efforts of Essex and Frankenfeld to the contrary. It makes absolutely NO sense to get rid of a valuable piece of local infrastructure, especially in this economy, when over 90 businesses have been documented as benefiting from the airport right where it is. Should those 90+ businesses have to suffer in order to benefit ONE SEASONAL business? That is ludicrous!
It's inevitable that Bader is going to move no matter the outcome of this election. Attendance at his functions has been WAY down for the past few years. Even if all the planets and stars in space were to align themselves and a miracle were to occur so that Bader was "given" the airport, I highly doubt he would be able to afford to develop it as he has boasted, especially in this economy. OK, what then? There goes a county asset down the tubes with the taxpayers having nothing left to show for it. You may want to put all of YOUR eggs in one basket, but I don't believe it is wise to gamble with the taxpayers' assets, especially when the county is nearly BROKE!
Larry and Gary have had enough time to prove themselves. The only thing I have witnessed from them is their inept spending, nearly bankrupting the county's general fund. It's time to take our county back! Give DUNLAP and WARD a chance in November!!
If ANY of those 90 businesses you mention depend so much on the airport, why hasn't even just one of them publicly stated that? Out of 90, you would think somebody would think it was important enough to say so. As hard as it is to get through the Summit area before and after an event it doesn't seem like attendance is down by much.
"As hard as it is to get through the Summit area" . . . roger, It looks like you only drive by Summit TWICE a year. Except for their TWO big events, I have absolutely NO problem getting by Summit because there are NO fans in the stands the other 50 weekends during the year . . . and I have the photos to prove this.
Roger here is part of a letter that explains the benifit of the airport to Huron County-
Have you used the Aerial Fertilizing / Aerial Seeding Service which has based its operation over the past 3-4 years during spring and summer months at the Huron County Airport, working with the local Sunrise Agronomy Co-Op. The Aerial company has fertilized over 40,000+ Acres of local farmland each of the past 2-3 year, spraying over ¾ of a million dollars of chemicals annually, increasing crop yields by 2-3 fold, and most important, profits for the local farm community members who used the services. Aerial Fertilizing /Seeding is becoming more popular and cost effective each year drawing more local farmers to use aerial methods in their farm operations.
Our current County Commissioners Larry Silcox and Gary Bauer, have done everything they can over the past 4 years to put our airport in a downward financial spiral, and increase danger to the users of the facility. Even though Silcox and Bauer have changed their positions as we get closer to election, their end game, no matter the consequences to agriculture, has always been to close the airport, and sell the county property to Bill Bader for his personal expansion. They refused to sign grant applications in 2011, and 2012, to improve the facility, and all at NO cost to the county taxpayer. They also made 2 recent airport board appointments, who instead of promoting and improving the airport for local agriculture, and other businesses, have done nothing but purposely create turmoil, and interfere with normal airport operations at every turn.
IMPORTANCE OF THE HURON COUNTY AIRPORT TO LOCAL AGRICULTURE
First, the airport is only a mile from the Sunrise Agronomy plant which makes their transportation of chemicals/fertilizer/seed very convenient, and cost efficient. The airport facility is in a perfect location to service the agricultural needs of Huron County farmers, as well as those from Erie, Ashland, and Lorain County. The paved runway is 75’ wide, and 4200’ in length which is important during the summer months when aircraft need a hard surface runway due to wet weather, and the extra runway length to ensure a safe departure on hot summer days when carrying full loads of fertilizer. There is self-serve fuel for convenience and 24/7 operations, especially important to get projects completed before the onset of inclement weather. There is also the ability to secure and store the aircraft and Ag equipment at the Huron County Airport during temporary down time.
CLOSURE OF THE HURON COUNTY AIRPORT, AND EFFECTS ON THE LOCAL AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY
What would closing the airport mean to local farmers who use the Aerial fertilizing or seeding services???
First, the Aerial Service would have to find a suitable airport with a paved runway long enough for use during the summer when chemicals are loaded to capacity. They would require accessible fuel 24/7, and equipment storage. Possible sites with all required services include Mansfield, Lorain County, Sandusky County, Ottawa County, and possibly Wakeman (a private airport), 12 miles NE, located in Lorain County. Moving the Aerial Fertilizing Operation to another airport location will add:
1. An increase in aircraft time to, and from farm locations,
2. An increase in the amount of aviation fuel used,
3. An increase in the Pilot’s time to and from farm locations, and the new airport,
4. An Increase in employees time, and
5. There may also be additional charges in the form of landing fees, storage of vehicles, chemical, etc.
Who do you think will pay for these additional expenses??? OBVIOUSLY, YOU - THE LOCAL FARMERS WHO USE THE AERIAL SERVICESart of a letter about the benifit of the airport to huron county-
The same people who will vote for Dunlap are the same ones who will vote for Obama,LOSERS!
The same people who vote for Silcox and Bauer are gullible MORONS and are the reason our economy is the way it is today!
Were you alive when dunlap was sheriff? probably not so you would not remember all the blunders that he did to get ousted so fast.
Please enlighten us all . . .
I didn't vote for Obama and never will.
He and Silcox are the same in that they only look toward themselves not the people.
They have both proven failures in office.
VOTE THEM BOTH OUT!
And Bauer needs dismissed as well.
Bauer needs to go,I'd have to agree but you have to weigh the lesser of two evils in the Silcox-Dunlap race, dunlap was a real gas as sheriff,it was like what will he do next, kinda like a comedy show.
What did Silcox do to be fired from the Sheriff's Dept?
In my beliefs, the first responsibility of government is to protect the citizens. Therefore, I am behind former sheriff Tom Dunlap. I think he understands with better clarity, the situations and difficuties Sheriff Howard experiences trying to police an area the size of Huron County. I have known Tom for quite a while and have found him to be a man of honor and think he is the better of the two men running.
Larry and AnAmerican really don't have to worry because after Tom is elected I'm sure they can get work next summer parking cars for Bill Bader. they actually might work for the "mega revenue generator" for free. I mean if Bader is your idea of a mega revenue generator, you really need to have your head examined. Larry's claim to fame during his term is 1. the loss of 2000 manufacturing jobs in HC, 2. increase in crime and drug trafficing and distribution due to the comm lack of support, 3. loss of a million dollars of federal grant money, and well the list goes on and on. I will vote for Tom.
OK, name a bigger revenue generator in Huron County than Summit Raceway.
Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Walmart, MTD, RR Donnelley, Sunrise, Americraft Carton, Janesville Acoustics, Norwalk Furniture . . . . just to name a few.
Let's see some numbers on that because I'm not buying it. You are only looking at payroll.
Economics 101 my friend . . . more payroll = more tax revenue for the county (in payroll taxes, etc.). Going on payroll alone, Summit discloses a little over $400,000 A YEAR in payroll. That does not hold a candle to any of these others. I'm still waiting to see your numbers to prove Summit's "mega revenue". Please, do show us!
