A former South Central school teacher has agreed to forfeit his teaching license after pleading guilty to an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Bradley T. Smith, of 3698 Ohio 547, Monroeville, pleaded guilty in Huron County Juvenile Court to the amended charge of attempting to contribute to the delinquency or unruliness of a minor, according to Chris Mushett, juvenile court administrator.

“That’s a second-degree misdemeanor and is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $750 fine,” Mushett said.

Mushett said a sentencing date has yet to be set, but a pre-sentence investigation is taking place.

“As part of the plea agreement, he (Smith) will permanently forfeit his teacher’s license,” Mushett said.

In May, the Reflector reported Smith, a first-year South Central Junior High teacher, was placed on paid administrative leave in connection with inappropriately contacting a juvenile female student. He was placed on leave May 15.

A letter to Smith dated May 14 indicates Huron County Children Services notified South Central Local Schools Elementary Principal Dennis Blanchard about 10 a.m. that day about an ongoing investigation about Smith “for inappropriate contact and/or conduct with a minor female student of another school district.” The Reflector obtained the information Friday through a public records request of Smith’s personnel file.

The Reflector asked former Superintendent Ben Chaffee about an allegation of texting. “I don’t want to elaborate on that,” said Chaffee, who said he didn’t know the age of the girl. Chaffee has since left the district to take a position at EHOVE.

Willard Police Sgt. Shannon Chaffins conducted the investigation into the situation along with Children Services.

Smith was hired Aug. 20, 2010 as a language arts/Title I junior high teacher. “This is his first full-time teaching position,” Chaffee said in May.

On March 14, Chaffee notified Smith via a letter he would be the subject of a reduction in force (RIF) because of the lack of federal funding for his position.

What a shame. He made an inappropriate decision to flirt with a 16-year-old and now all of his hard work to become a teacher has gone down the drain.

Why is this story getting so much less coverage then the female norwalk teacher. How is this less worthy of a front cover multi month story?
