A local man was sentenced to two years in prison for possessing two kinds of drugs.

Eduardo Gonzalez, 55, of 118 Beelman St., Plymouth, pleaded guilty last month to one count each of possession of cocaine and possession of oxycodone for a May 21 incident. In a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss one count each of possession of weapons while under disability and possession of criminal tools.

Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway on Wednesday agreed to waive a $5,000 fine in exchange for Gonzalez forfeiting the $900 in cash and the weapons that the Willard Police Department seized as evidence. Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler has said Gonzalez was in possession of "several months worth of disability cash."

The possession of oxycodone charge, a third-degree felony, had a minimum fine of $5,000 and a presumption of prison time.

Huron County Public Defender David Longo requested his client be placed on probation since this was Gonzalez's first felony conviction and his complete criminal history included incidents of driving without a license, a passing bad check charge "and maybe a couple of DUIs."

Gonzalez declined to speak on his own behalf. The judge ordered him to pay $80 in restitution to Willard police to cover the cost of drug testing and suspended the defendant's driver's license for six months.

Conway said he would consider releasing Gonzalez early from prison after a year and recommend transitional control for the last six months of his sentence. Gonzalez is credited with being in the Huron County Jail for about 121 days. He could be on up to three years of parole after his prison term.
