The Huron County commissioners ended all suspense Thursday and voted down the airport's federal grant application.

The application needed the commissioners' approval and signature before it could be forwarded to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its consideration.

The vote to turn down the application was 3-0.

The commissioners also voted to send a four-page letter to Dennis Sokol, airport board president, and the airport board members explaining the reasons for their decision.

The grant could have brought about $232,000 in federal funds to the airport for improvements, including tree removal and drainage work.

NT5, your comments make you sound like a 10 year old.

NorwalkTaxpayer5

awww come on now, no need to ruffle your skirt kiddo....come on, there is right and there is wrong, fair and unfair, common sense vs fodder, and there is always the greater good.....say it with me, I know you can dooooo it! BUH-BYE AIRPORT, BUH-BYE NOW!

Windy

Tell that to the people facing the Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico wildfires who are very thankful for the aerial firefighting. The Firelands burned once, it could burn again. Ohio lies on large geographical fault which could cause an earthquake. There could be an outbreak of tornadoes, a flood, or the dam at the reservoir could fail. One can never predict a disaster. Being prepared in advance is the best plan. How quickly can Bader take down his temporary bleachers so that an air tanker could land there? NT5, your magic crystal ball is clouded by the brainwashing you have received from the Commissioners.

NorwalkTaxpayer5

Reach reach reach, you really are pulling them out of your....shoe, yeah, that's it...your shoe!.....40 years with no disaster even remotely big enough to use your little playground.....we don't need LeClair La-La Land.....we can use a multitude of other areas, including the Wakeman and Willard airports!

MOVE ON OVER! BUH-BYE AIRPORT, BUH-BYE!

Windy

1 seasonal business > 87 full-time businesses = MISFEASANCE

NorwalkTaxpayer5

1 business = Millions of dollars over the years and millions more in the future

87 full-time businesses(most out of county that may fly by once a year) = No noticeable funds for Huron County even after 40 flippin years!!!

COME ON NOW, SAY WITH ME...MOVE ON OVER, BUH-BYE AIRPORT, BUH-BYE!

Windy

Grab another six-pack and scratch your . . . head, yeah, that's it . . . your head! The people in Wakeman and Willard will be receiving supplies while those in Norwalk won't because the supplies will not be able to get through. Yea, you are a real visionary, a master of city planning . . . nothing prepared for a "rainy day".

NorwalkTaxpayer5

LMAO, yeah ok, you should be a screenwriter for those morons in Hollywood.....this is Huron County, we're not buying it :) BUH-BYE AIRPORT

Windy

PROVE IT!! Show us the ACTUAL figures!

Ralph Wiggum

Can I prove it like Dan and dream up a list of names?

Windy

Aha, the redirect tactic again! Dan has actually SEEN and/or SPOKEN PERSONALLY to ALL of those on the list of 87 businesses that use the airport. They were added to the list ONLY when he was physically there. What businesses came in when he WASN'T there? We'll never know because they are NOT on the list. We're all still waiting to see the ACTUAL figures from the racetrack. Come on . . . prove it!

Ralph Wiggum

You clowns stand on taxpayer land with your hands extended demanding even more taxpayer help and you want proof of tax production from someone else? LOL!!! If one of racetrack's employees or visitors threw a penny onto airport property, that would be more profit for the airport than it made selling 17,000+ gallons of fuel! Is this a special weekend when they sell airport fuel at a discount to make more money on volume? LOL!!! You also could organize a crew of airport volunteers to comb the ground under the bleachers at the track to bolster airport profits for next year's grant application?

Windy

The taxpayers of Huron County have given ZERO dollars to the airport in over two years and the airport is operating in the BLACK. The matching funds for the grant would have come from donations collected by the Friends of the Airport, costing the taxpayers of Huron County NOTHING. Let's talk about wasting taxpayers' money like the Commissioners do; $1000 for picnic tables, $300,000 to the Ohio State Ag. Program, $500,000 loan for a courthouse vestibule, giving away over a MILLION dollars in grant money which would have cost the taxpayers NOTHING and put LOCAL people to work (=payroll taxes). I'm curious, is there a space on the 1040 for reporting graft?

propman

Ralph for two years the airport has gotten nothing from the commissioners except bullcrap. Then you come along and complain about it's cost to the taxpayer? It has payed it's bills on it's own and you're still not satisfied? You use derogatory language when commenting about about those of us who support the airport when you're not personaly attacking us.

dchar

Carl, whether you are on as RW of NT5, you are still the CLOWN. You keep hammering away with ther same BS. Get your self a new dog. You've beaten the old one to death, and nobody but you is listening. You really do have mental issues as someone else posted. The hangar tenants appear to be paying the bills and keeping the airport in the black so the local economy can reap the benefits of recreational and business air traffic coming and going. Bury your head all you want. Somebody was able to show that 89 businesses have benefited from the airport, which is more valuable information than your intentional coverup.

propman

Watch he may have another screen name "KnuckleDragger". I've seen Knuckhead on the article about the last airport board meeting.

iamrevolutionary

Oh, don't forget...you accuse me of being him also... You sound paranoid /schizophrenic to me and everyone on this blog, except your alter/egos..... Anyone that disagrees with you fly boys, and wants to use their tax dollars wisely, is a commissioner! Believe it or not, some of us county residents think that this airstrip is an albatross! Whether or not the drag strip expands, I could care less.. but the air strip must go.

Windy

If the commissioners are so wise in their use of our tax dollars, why did Silcox and Bauer put their signatures on the 2007 federal grant which put the county in the legal position of having to keep the airport open IN PERPETUITY? Why did the commissioners spend $1000 for TWO picnic tables? Why did the commissioners give away $300,000 to the Ohio State Ag. Program? Why are the commissioners sitting on a $500,000 LOAN for a useless courthouse vestibule? Why did the commissioners waste $7500 on the Clark & Winestock Report? Why did the commissioners cut the Sheriff's budget in HALF when the drug problem is growing? The three stooges won't be happy until the whole county is in the toilet. The airport is an important piece of infrastructure (which is operating in the BLACK in spite of its county budget of ZERO) from which 89+ FULL-TIME businesses benefit, including the SEASONAL racetrack. If they were smart, the commissioners would try to find a way to build up BOTH the racetrack AND the airport to attract even MORE people to the area, just look at Daytona and Talladega. SAVE OUR COUNTY - Silcox and Bauer need to GO this November!

SHOW US THE MONIES THAT SUMMIT BRINGS TO HURON COUNTY!!!!

Windy

What other county departments MAKE MONEY for Huron County? Please provide us with a complete list and how much profit each one has made for Huron County.

NorwalkTaxpayer5

Other departments do not provide fuel to non-employees at cost nor do they provide prepaid charge cards.....many departments are mandated.....the list could go on and on.....nice REACH....keep reaching and reaching and reaching

propman

Nice chant there. When will you actually give substance to your argument?

propman

Essex holds the position of assistant Engineer. But I ask what exactlly is he engineering? To me it seems all he is engineering is politics.
Besides only someone who'd consider turning down a grant that costs the county nothing then says the Engineers office can do the work on the county"s taxpayers dime could consider Essex intelligent.
Who'd hold you accountable to the taxpayer for that idea?

Windy

NT5 - You should be a politician. What line were you in when they were passing out common sense?

propman

He wasn't in line , he was probably passed out.

propman

At least windy can write. All you seem to be able to do is chant. How about some substance to you comments?

propman

The airport board has a mandate to maintain and improve the airport. That can not be done to the best of their abilities when the commissioners are blocking them like they have the last several years.

Windy

No, they just allow county employees to post anti-airport rhetoric on the NR blogs and do all the "dirty work" for the Commissioners while they're still on the County's time. Do you get paid overtime for all the posts you do after 5 pm?

CaptainMidnight

You are deluded.

ohiobuzzard

The fuel is a convenience for those that use the airport. and yes it maybe that the sales and the markup are not as high as some would like, But they are still in the black and every gallon sold has Federal tax on it that all the airports get a cut of so it's returning money that is not being shown. And is still not costing the tax payer anything. The Airport is bought and paid for it operates in the black. If it were to be sold, the county would get an influx of funds that it would quickly spend (might even get a few new cars for the sheriff's dept). But in a few years it would be gone and we would have nothing to show for giving up a viable airport that currently is and asset to the community.
