A 9-month-old boy allegedly beaten by a local man is out of the hospital and in foster care, Huron County Sheriff Dane Howard said Thursday.
Christoffer M. Mills, 20, of 309 Edwards Road, is in custody in the Huron County Jail on a $100,000 bond on a charge of felonious assault on suspicion of severely injuring the baby.
The victim sustained nine fractures, half of which were to his extremities and the rest to his torso.
Howard said the most recent injures were inflicted July 19, and there were previous untreated injuries. The sheriff said he is aware of three beating instances within the last two months. He added his department has no knowledge of a criminal history involving Mills.
Mills admitted to injuring the baby, the son of his girlfriend, with whom he has been living for the last several months, Howard said. He added the boy's biological father has been notified about the incidents.
Howard said Mills, who was at first "deceitful," eventually admitted to losing his temper with the infant and injuring the child.
Howard said the suspect told him "the child paid the price" for his temper.
The Huron County Department of Job and Family Services (HCDJFS), through the county prosecutor's office, filed a complaint the child was believed to be abused and neglected. The complaint was filed Wednesday in Huron County Juvenile Court.
After a shelter care hearing the same day, the child was placed in the custody of HCDJFS pending a further hearing. It is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 29, Huron County Juvenile Court administrator Chris Mushett said.
The sheriff said further charges are possible.
"It's still early in the investigation and there are some persons of interest that we need to speak to in more detail," he said. "We feel strongly that Mr. Mills is the primary actor" in the attacks.
Howard said his office worked extensively with Huron County children's services and the Akron Children's Hospital, which were very helpful.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a child has SEVERE injuries. Eight broken bones go "unchecked". Either baby mama turned a blind eye, or is just too friggin stupid to care for a child. That is what everyone on here is posting about, and to come on here and try to "defend" her is about pointless! When she is charged, the likes of you and demented will be gone, thank god!

Mom I hope you wise up and make better choices for your child "if" you are lucky enough to get him back. That baby should be your first priority not shacking up with some new guy! These babies are defenseless and its up to you to make sure he is safe. Put him before wants and needs!
