The runner-up in the bid to replace the outgoing Norwalk law director landed a nice consolation prize — assistant law director.

Norwalk’s current Assistant Law Director — and soon-to-be law director — Stuart O’Hara announced Doug Clifford would be his replacement.

O’Hara was tabbed in March to replace Jim Conway, who will be leaving the post in May to take over for retiring Huron County Common Pleas Judge Earl McGimpsey.

Clifford was the other formal candidate for Conway’s post. He has a private practice and also works in the Huron County Public Defender’s office — he will give up both jobs when he assumes his new post.

O’Hara said Clifford had an extensive background in both criminal and civil law. O’Hara also joked that Clifford’s work with the public defender’s office would come in handy “when those nasty defense lawyers are trying to pull a fast one on us.”

Clifford thanked the mayor, O’Hara and the community for “the opportunity to help make life better for the citizens of Norwalk.”

Unlike the current system, O’Hara plans to continue to do some criminal prosecution and Clifford, who has been attending council meetings since last July, will then be more involved with the city’s civil issues.

“I look forward to continuing (to attend council meetings),” Clifford said. “It is important that the assistant law director be in the loop on matters effecting the city.”

However, Clifford will have to give up his position on the city’s planning and zoning committee. Council will review a list of residents who had said they would work on that committee, but if anyone else is interested they can contact city hall (419) 663-6700.

O’Hara’s salary as assistant law director was $55,000 in 2007. The law director salary for 2007 is $75,000 and $77,600 in 2008.
