Edison headed back to state duals championships

BLOOMDALE — For a third time in six years, the Edison wrestling team advanced to the Division III state dual team championships in Columbus.

Edison handled Defiance Ayersville (75-3), Liberty Center (47-22) and Delta (46-27) at Saturday’s Region 17 championships at Elmwood High School to advance to Sunday’s eight-team state championships at St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University.

Edison is 4-1 all-time at the state duals, winning the state championship in 2017.

In the finals against Delta, Casey Barnett (113 pounds), Ray Adams (120), Jordan Keegan (145), Griffin Soviak (170) and Jacob Thompson (182) all won by pin — each in less than 98 seconds.

Also in the finals for Edison, Jakey Neer (126) won by technical fall (20-5), as did Jacob Brewer at 195 (18-1). At 152, Shadrick Slone won by a 9-7 decision, and Logan Lloyd did the same with a 4-0 win at 160.

“We knew Delta would be a tough one,” Edison coach Dave Hermes said. “We actually went down 18-17 after 138, but we had some freshmen step up big. We didn’t lose a match from 145 to 220 and there were some toss-up matches in there that we had freshmen win. Shad[rick] Slone beat a senior [Dawson Swicegood] that was state-ranked, then Logan Lloyd, another freshman at 160, went and got a 4-0 win.

“Griffin Soviak, was just coming back off an injury that kept him out six weeks,” he added. “We weighed him in at 160 as a 152-pounder and bumped him up to 170, and he went out and got the pin.”

In an impressive display in the 75-3 rout over Ayersville in the quarterfinals, Edison won 13 of the 14 matches, with a staggering 12 by pin.

Alec Homan (106), Barnett (113), Ray Adams (120), Neer (126), Garrett Scott (132), Jordan Keegan (138), Slone (145), Lloyd (152), Soviak (160), Thompson (182), Jacob Brewer (195) and Cason Holmes (220) all won by pin. Heavyweight Jackson Berardi won an 8-3 decision.

In the semifinals against Liberty Center, Homan (106), Barnett (120), Scott (132), Slone (145) and Soviak (170) won by pin.

Lloyd won by major decision (12-1) at 152, while Jared Fantuzzi posted an 11-2 major decision at 113. Holmes scored a 10-5 decision at 220.

Barnett, a sophomore and defending state champion, earned his 100th win on Saturday.

Genoa, Mantua Crestwood, Rootstown, Marion Pleasant, Bidwell River Valley, Blanchester and Versailles along with the Chargers will make up the championship field on Sunday.

“I hope we’re the No. 2 or No. 3 seed,” Hermes said. “I think we deserve it. Our only losses are to Genoa and Oregon Clay, and Genoa is obviously going to be the No. 1 seed.”
