Stieber will again compete at the the 65 kg (143 pounds) weight for the U.S. in Peru, a weight class higher than where he won his 2016 World title in Budapest, Hungry. This is his second-straight appearance at the Pan-American Championships.
Last year, the 2010 Monroeville graduate finished with a bronze medal.
The men’s freestyle tournament will be held on May 5-6, the final two days of competition in Peru. For all four days, the tournament will begin at 10 a.m. local time with the qualification rounds and repechage. The finals are set for 6 p.m. local time each day. Lima, Peru, is situated one hour behind U.S. Eastern time.
This weekend, Stieber is the top overall seed among 12 wrestlers at 65kg at the U.S. Open tournament in Las Vegas.
The winner of the 65kg weight moves into the World Team Trials best-of-three challenge finals slated for June 16 at Penn State University in State College, Pa. Whoever wins the best-of-three in June will represent Team USA at the World championships in Budapest, Hungary.
One of four four-time NCAA individual champions all-time while at Ohio State with a 119-3 record, Stieber won the non-Olympic weight worlds at 61kg in 2016 and has a Junior world silver (2011) to his international resume.
At Monroeville, Stieber was 184-1 with four state championships. He helped the Eagles to the state team championship in Division III in 2010, and the state runners-up trophy in 2009.
