High wind warning for Huron County

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning that will be in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday for Huron County and the surrounding areas.

A deepening storm system is bringing strong winds to the area today.

A strengthening storm system over the Plains moved into the Upper Great lakes Saturday night. It is to remain north of the area through today. A cold front associated with this system was to move through the region early this morning, with strong west winds developing behind it. Winds will gradually subside tonight into Monday.

A southwest of 25 to 35 mph is expected, with gusts up to 65 mph possible.

Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. All loose property should be secured.

Winds are strong as 55 mph are possible in Norwalk this weekend.

Because of that, the National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch that will be in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday for Huron County and the surrounding areas.

A strengthening storm system over the Plains will move into the Upper Great lakes Saturday night, and remain north of the area through Sunday. A cold front associated with this system will move through the region  Saturday night, with strong west winds developing behind it Sunday morning. 

With west winds blowing at 30 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph possible, trees and power lines likely will be downed in various places throughout the region, the weather service reported. As a result, widespread power outages are expected.

Travel will be difficult during that time, especially for high-profile vehicles, the weather service added.

Winds will gradually subside Sunday night into Monday.

Here is the Norwalk-area weekend forecast from the weather service:

Saturday - A chance of showers, mainly after 2 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 48. Southeast wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday night - Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 10 p.m. Low around 45. Breezy, with a south wind 17 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday - Showers likely, mainly before 10 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Windy, with a west wind 31 to 33 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. Windy, with a west wind 23 to 29 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph.
