Winter Storm Harper arrives today

• Jan 19, 2019 at 6:00 AM

Norwalk and the surrounding areas are under a winter storm warning that went into effect at midnight.

The warning will stay in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The snowstorm — called Winter Storm Harper — is impacting northern Ohio today.

Low pressure is tracking from the southern Plains through the lower Ohio Valley today, bringing a swath of heavy snow.

Snow will be heavy at times this afternoon and evening. This system will quickly depart to the East Coast by Sunday and will be followed by lake effect snow later Sunday and Sunday night across the snow belt.

In addition to the potential for heavy snow, northeast winds will gust to between 30 and 40 mph with the strongest winds across Northwest Ohio and near Lake Erie. Blowing and drifting of snow is expected tonight.

Much colder air will arrive behind this system on Sunday with wind chill values falling to between zero and 15 below on Sunday night.

Here is more information from the weather service:

WHAT: Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches expected. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

WHERE: Huron, Erie, Richland, Ashland and Wayne counties, including the cities of Norwalk, Sandusky, Mansfield, Ashland and Wooster

WHEN: From midnight tonight to 10 a.m. Sunday.

OTHER INFO: Travel could be very difficult. The cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Blowing and drifting snow will develop during Saturday afternoon.

A winter storm warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
