HURON — The Western Reserve volleyball team won another Division III sectional championship on Saturday, topping Edison in four games at Huron High School.

Western (17-7) won by scores of 19-25, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-19 to advance to Tuesday’s district semifinal vs. Huron (20-3) at 6 p.m. at Willard High School.

“That first game Edison came out with more energy than we did,” Western Reserve coach Lisa Muenz said. “But I feel that shows some maturity on my teams part that they were able to bounce back and take control the next three games.”

Avery Tubbs paced the Roughriders at the net with 14 kills, while Morgan White had 13 and Emma Weber added 11 kills and four blocks.

“Emma had a big day for us,” Muenz sid. “That was probably one of her best matches she has played this year.”

Hannah Burke was 136-of-137 setting with 35 assists for Western — giving her 1,025 assists for her varsity career in three seasons. She also served 13 points. Morgan Spettle added 21 digs and Alyssa Burch served nine points.

Edison finished the season with a 7-17 record.

For the Chargers, Kira Appeman had eight kills and eight digs, Natalie Lambert had 15 assists and seven digs, and Melissa Kuhl had six kills.

Also for Edison, Grace Houser had 24 digs. Lilli Schuster had 14 digs, and Olivia Vitaz had 15 digs and five assists.

A year ago, the Roughriders surprised Huron in the same matchup by rallying from a 2-1 deficit to win in five games — though this year’s Tigers team comes in ranked No. 2 in the final state coaches poll.

“Tuesday night will be tough. It will look a little like David and Goliath,” Muenz said. “Huron will be the biggest team we’ve seen this year. They are athletic as well as tall.

“Our challenge will be to make very few errors, and our defense will need to be at its best,” she added. “Hopefully we bring our best game and make it an interesting match.”

OTTAWA HILLS — Visiting Edison struck first, but the Green Bears scored the final three times in a 3-1 win over the Chargers in Saturday’s Div. III sectional championship match at Ottawa HIlls High School.

Edison’s Aliyah Caporini scored seven minutes into the match to give her team a 1-0 lead. But the Bears tied things up, then took a 2-1 lead with 5:09 left in the first half.

Both teams then played through deteriorating weather conditions throughout the second half, and the Bears sealed the win with a goal in the final minute.
