A senior, Holida will enter the Division II boys long jump competition today with the second-best jump among the 16 athletes competing in two flights beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State in Columbus.
Last week, Holida won the regional meet held at Lexington with a jump of 22-feet-7.75 inches. Among the 16 competitors Friday, that raises only Trey Tucker (Cuyahoga Falls CVCA), who jumped 22-feet-9.
Ethan Tabor (Thornville Sheridan) at 22-feet-3.5 and Mykal Bright (Cincinnati Indian Hill) at 22-feet-0.25 are the only other athletes entering the long jump who cleared 22 feet last week in the regional round.
Last season at state, Holida was 15th with a jump of 19-feet-11.5.
Over the last month, Holida has jumped 21-feet-3.75 on May 11 at the SBC championships at Bellevue, and 22-feet-2.75 at the Oak Harbor district on May 18.
Also for Willard, Felicia Rosvanis will run at 4 p.m. in the Div. II girls 400-meter dash preliminary race.
Rosvanis’ regional time was 59.25 seconds, which seeds fifth in her heat and 12th overall among the 18 competitors. The top nine runners will advance to Saturday’s championship race with a chance to medal.
Over the last month, Rosvanis ran 1:00.63 on May 11 to win the SBC Bay division race, 1:00.39 to place third at the May 18 Oak Harbor district — and then 59.25 on May 26 to place fourth at the Lexington regional.
Monroeville’s Smith makes fourth state trip
The setting at Jesse Owens Stadium will be a familiar one for Monroeville senior Kristen Smith, who is making her fourth appearance in Columbus.
Smith will run at 10:35 a.m. Friday in the 400 prelim race. Her 58.67-second time is seeded sixth in her heat, and 11th overall out of 18 runners.
Last season, Smith ran 59.80 seconds at state to finish 12th out of 16 runners in the 400. In 2016, she ran the event in 58.58 seconds, earning All-Ohio honors and seventh place, while as a freshman in 2015, her 60.20 run in the finals earned her All-Ohio eighth place.
Over the last month, Smith ran 59.89 at the Firelands Conference championships on May 11 at Crestview. She is the FC record holder (58.64), set in 2016.
At the Bucyrus district on May 19, Smith ran 1:00.10 for second place, while her 58.67 last week at the Lancaster regional on May 25 was good for third.
New London duo eyes podium
A pair of New London athletes will compete in the boys and girls preliminaries on Friday.
On the boys side, sophomore Jacob Allen finds himself potentially jumping for a spot on the podium in the Div. III pole vault competition at 4 p.m. Friday.
Allen’s 13-feet-8 effort that was second at the regional meet in Tiffin on May 25 is tied for the eighth-best jump out of 16 competitors. There is also just four inches separating that jump from the top three, based off everyone’s regional jumps.
Allen won the FC championship on May 9 at Crestview with an effort of 13-feet-6, a height he replicated on May 19 to win the Perkins district on May 19.
Meanwhile, senior Maryonna Cathey will run in the 300 hurdles preliminary race at 11:20 a.m. Friday.
Cathey was eighth at the FC championships in 55.68 seconds on May 11 at Crestview, but bounced back in big fashion. She won the Perkins district on May 19 in 46.19 seconds, and then dropped to 46.10 to win the Tiffin regional on May 25.
The 46.10 is the fifth-best time in her heat, and 11th overall out of 18 runners. The top nine will advance to Saturday’s final.
South Central’s Hauler in long jump
Sophomore Izzy Hauler will cap her season at the championship meet for South Central Friday.
Hauler is in the Div. III long jump for the Trojans, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Her postseason trail saw Hauler win the FC championships on May 9 with an effort of 16-feet-3.5. She went further on May 19 at the Bucyrus district, jumping 16-feet-7 to place second in the event.
At last week’s regional meet in Lancaster, Hauler nearly equaled that distance, reaching 16-feet-6.5 to earn the fourth and final automatic spot to state. That jump puts Hauler 14th out of the 16 long jumpers entering today’s competition.
