Charles R. “Bob” Sheldon

MENTOR — Charles R. “Bob” Sheldon, age 84, of Mentor Ohio died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, April 10th, 2018.

Bob was born in Norwalk, Ohio to Charles R. and Rose J. Sheldon. After graduating from Norwalk High School, Bob attended The Ohio State University prior to enlisting in the Navy. He married the love of his life, Barbara L. Ruffing on February 10, 1957.

While in the Navy, Bob served as a commissioned Naval Aviator. As a pilot, he had the privilege of flying “Bill the Goat” to the Navy football games. He flew 11 combat missions to Vietnam earning an Air Medal. Bob and Barbara raised 5 children during his years of service with many different postings state side and in Naha, Okinawa Japan.

After the Navy, Bob continued flying for Mohawk Airlines before settling in Mentor Ohio and working for Parker Hannifin.

He served as president of Mentor Boosters and coached girls’ softball teams. He and Barb attended the Mentor Football games well into their retirement and spent much of their time golfing together throughout their travels. Bob and Barbara loved traveling to New York, New Orleans and Michigan to visit their beloved grandchildren and attend their programs and sporting events. Bob was a lifelong OSU buckeye fan. Bob was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church of Mentor.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, parents and brother Timothy Sheldon. Bob is survived by his sons Charles R. “Chuck” (Gaynel) Sheldon, Jr. of Dublin, Oh, Christopher A. “Chris” (Janice) Sheldon, of Tully, NY, Gregory T. (Jennie) Sheldon of Dublin, Oh and his daughters Leslie J. (Miles) Walsh of Mentor, Oh, and Elizabeth J. “Beth” (Bob) Laderer of Lacombe, La: his grandchildren, Paige, Gabriel and Preston (Kirstin), Samuel and Sophia, Zoie and Hayden Sheldon, Corey and Kevin Walsh, Kelli and Bobbi Laderer, several nieces and nephews and his brother-in-law Raymond “Ray” Kettel of Norwalk, Ohio.

The family will receive friends 4-8 pm Thursday April 19, 2018 at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060, where a military honors service will be held at 8 pm to conclude the visitation.

A funeral mass will be held 2:30 pm Friday April 20, 2018 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 91 East Main St., Norwalk, OH 44857. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Norwalk, OH.
