Rachel (Seamon) Battiste, 89, of Norwalk died early Thursday morning, May 22, 2014, in Norwalk Memorial Home.
She was born on January 12, 1925, in Columbus, Ohio. She attended Capital University in Columbus where she met her future husband, Quentin Battiste, who was attending Evangelical Lutheran Seminary. She and her husband served churches in Bear Branch, Indiana; Thornville, Ohio; Lancaster, Ohio; and Perrysburg, Ohio. They moved to Norwalk in 1970 where he served as pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church until his retirement in 1984.
Rachel was a school teacher. When she moved to Norwalk, she initiated a reading lab and taught at the high school. While teaching, she also earned her Masters Degree in Education from Bowling Green State. University. Then for nine years she worked for the Huron County Juvenile Court System as the Coordinator for the Reach Our Youth (ROY) program.
Active in all the congregations where she and her husband served, her primary focus was Christian education (Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Church Council) and working with the women 's groups.
She enjoyed gardening, music, travel, writing, and genealogy. She was a woman of love and service to her family, church, and community.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years. She is survived by her daughter , Rebecca (Ron) Voss, of Miles, Iowa; two sons, Pastor Edward ( Marilyn) Battiste of Farmington Hills, Michigan; Robert (Jan) Battiste, of Huron, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Friends may call on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter Lutheran Church, 243 Benedict Ave., Norwalk, Ohio. Interment will follow in St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, Pontiac, Ohio. All memorials should be directed to St. Peter Lutheran Church.
