Mary Eloise Evans

Mary Eloise Evans, 93, of Sandusky, the first woman to serve as an Erie County Sheriff's Deputy, passed away early Friday evening, January 10, 2014 at Stein Hospice Care Center, following a lengthy illness.

She was born June 28, 1920 on a small farm on Hull Road, Huron Township to the late John and Zura (Kahler) Von Eitzen.

Mrs. Evans was active in a variety of Erie Co. community activities during her lifetime. She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1938 and Sandusky Business College in 1939. She was first employed by Apex Electrical Manufacturing Co., and then became chairman of the Reunion Planning Committee from 1957 - 2007 after the plant closed. In 1970 Mrs. Evans was elected Erie Co. Clerk of Courts and served in the office until 1981, when she became the first woman to be elected as Erie Co. Commissioner, where she served a four year term before retiring in 1985. After her retirement, she worked part-time for Erie Co. Clerk of Courts.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Huron, State and National Granges for over 75 years, a member of the Erie Co. visitors' and Convention Bureau Board of Trustees, the Erie Co. Clerks and Trustees Association, the Erie Co. Republican Women, the VFW Auxiliary 2529, and a member of the Erie Co. Community Improvement Committee. She was also an honorary member of the Safe Harbor Board of Directors.

Mary Eloise is survived by her son Gary M. (Donita) Evans; daughter-in-law, Janet Evans; grandchildren, Bryon Evans, Steven Haker, Kelly Parish, Ricky Hemmer, Valerie Rose, and Theresa Millis; many great and great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Including her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin "Mike" Evans, to whom she was married 35 years; son, Marvin "Butch" Evans; daughter, Wilma Jean Hemmer; and grandson, John Hemmer.

Friends may call, Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2014, 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Rev. Doug Winner will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
