Bertha Thomas, age 92, of Norwalk, died Monday, September 02, 2013 at Twilight Gardens Home.
She was born January 11, 1921 in Lower Salem, OH to the late Arthur and Minnie (Blair) Hupp.
She was the oldest of seven siblings, Alice, Laura, Ruth, Dayton, Clyde and Paul. Owing to the difficult economic conditions of the time, Bertha was not able to continue schooling beyond the eighth grade. She worked to support herself as a cook and housekeeper.
Bertha was married to William D. Thomas of Doanville, OH. In 1940 they moved to Sandusky, where William worked at the Plumbrook Ordnance Works. William was a factory worker and noted amateur artist, and the couple later divorced.
She had two children, a daughter, Vivian M. Thomas of Norwalk; and a son, Edwin L. Thomas of Memphis, TN and is married to Mary Margaret Jefferson. There are no grandchildren, but many nieces and nephews. The family lived in Sandusky, where both Vivian and Edwin graduated from Sandusky High School. Edwin earned a degree at Miami (Ohio) University and a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. Bertha and Vivian lived together for 40 years in Norwalk, and Bertha managed Jean Frock's women's apparel store in downtown Norwalk, which closed upon her retirement in 1986. She began working at the Jean Frocks store in Sandusky and later became a regional manager for the clothing stores in Ohio and eastern Pennsylvania, as well as manager of the Norwalk store.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery, cooking and making jams and jellies, and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Norwalk.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Dayton A. Hupp, Laura Gilbeaut, Paul Hupp, and Alice V. Smith. She is survived by her brother, Clyde Hupp of Toledo; and sister, Ruth Hale of Marion, OH.
