Melvin G. Blackburn, age 91, of Norwalk, passed away Friday evening, June 21, 2013 at Fisher-Titus Medical Center.
He was born April 11, 1922 in Brookstown, NC to the late William W. and Hattie (Bailey) Blackburn and was a member of the Bethlehem AME Church. He served in the US Army from 1943 until 1945. He worked 28 years at Farrell Cheek in Sandusky, and after retirement also worked at the Norwalk Reflector and Salvation Army. He was honored as Huron County Senior of the Year in 2006. He enjoyed tinkering with cars, gardening, fishing, hunting with his dogs, built his own home, and traveled between Ohio and North Carolina to visit family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Katie C. (Covington) Blackburn; children, William P. (Dorothy) Blackburn of Elyria, Harvey L. (Virginia) Blackburn of Elyria, Diane (Arthur) Burchett of Sandusky, and Denise (Dwindal Webb) Blackburn of Port Clinton; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorrainne Roseboroug and Juanita Crouch, both of Winston Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Melvin G. Blackburn Jr.; siblings, Howard, Beluah, Elizabeth, Evelyn, Bessie and Fred.
Friends may call on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 11:00 A.M. until time of service at 1:00 P.M. at the Norwalk Alliance Church, 2755 US Route 250 South, Norwalk, OH. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
