Jane Wilkinson Slessman

WILLARD — Jane Wilkinson Slessman went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday afternoon, May 24, 2013 at MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield. She was born January 4, 1923 in Schenectady, NY to Clair Whitman and Ruth (House) Wilkinson. Her parents later moved to Willard where she worked in her their paint store and was active in Willard First Presbyterian Church.

Jane graduated valedictorian from Willard High School in 1941. While in High School she was active as the editor of the Crimson and White school paper and yearbook. She graduated from Bowling Green University in 1945 with a degree in Home Economics Education.

Jane taught for several years in Mt. Vernon, OH before marrying Harold H. Slessman on August 8, 1947. They had one daughter, Barbara Jane Hendrickson. In 1950 Harold and Jane started Slessman Excavating, which they operated until 1978. Upon retiring, they enjoyed their motor home and spent 19 winters at the Islander Park in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Jane continued to winter in Lake Havasu after Harold passed away on August 19, 2009.

Jane was very active in the New Haven United Methodist Church. She was also actively involved with the Willard Public Library for many years, and was a judge for Iris shows for in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughter. She is survived by her son-in-law Brad Hendrickson and granddaughter Bethany Joy Hendrickson of Ashland, Ohio. Also surviving are brother and sister-in-law Bruce (Della) Wilkinson of Norton Shores, MI, and their daughter Kathy Jo (Mark) Mitchell and family, also of Norton Shores, and son Lee Wilkinson of Wheaton, IL.

Surviving nieces and nephew and their spouses include: Clair Buckingham and family of Mesa, Arizona, Karen & Russell Fichtelman and family of Sunbury, Ohio, Shirley Heckman and family of Willard, Paul and Mary Buckingham and family of Willard, Bill and Beverly Chapman and family of Plymouth, Gordon and Janet McKenzie of New Haven, Kathy Slessman and family of rural Willard, Duane & Dorothy Slessman and family of rural Plymouth, Jeanine Slessman and family of Plymouth, Jim and Marilyn Buckingham of Virginia, Alice Marie Buckingham and Family of Willard, Chuck Podgurski of Plymouth, and Gene Smith and family of Willard.

Calling hours will precede the services at New Haven United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Memorial gifts may be given to the New Haven Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
