Carol Jean Stephens

Carol Jean Stephens 77, of Milan, Ohio, passed away Monday morning, December 10, 2012 at her residence.

Carol Jean Stephens was born March 14, 1935 in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Frederick Ralph and Marian Ruth (Neuman) Didelius.

Carol was a graduate of Sandusky High School. She received her Nursing Degree from the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, and continued her education at The Ohio State University, where she received her Bachelor’s & Master’s Degree in Nursing.  Carol was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National Honorary Society of Nursing, and she received the Certificate of Authority from the Ohio Board of Nursing, which permitted her to practice as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.

 Carol was a public health nurse in Columbus, she also taught nursing at the University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, and Lorain County Community College. 

She served as a project director for a curriculum grant for the Providence Hospital School of Nursing, and she retired as the school nurse from Perkins Public Schools after 21 years of dedicated service.  In 2009, Carol was honored as a Woman of Excellence from the Volunteer Center of Erie County. She was a member of several professional  nursing and educational organizations as well as the Sandusky Yacht Club, Habitat for Humanity, Huron County Master Gardeners, Zion Lutheran Church Senior Choir, Women’s Auxiliary, the American Nurses Association, the NEA, and the Erie County Republican Women. In her spare time, Carol enjoyed sports, music, and spending time with her family.

Carol is survived by her husband Lee Stephens whom she married September 1, 1962; her daughter, Karen Stephens of Cary, NC.; her sons, Brian Stephens of New Bern, NC., Keith (DiAnn) Stephens of New Carlisle, OH., and Paul Stephens of Shiloh, IL.; three grandchildren, Katherine, Michael, and Sophia Stephens; two step-grandsons, Cody and Bradley Robinson; her sister Diane Hammond of Haymarket, VA.; and her brother, Dr. Donald Didelius of Walla Walla, WA.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call on Thursday, December 13 from 4 pm to 7 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, OH. 44870. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 10 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave. Sandusky. Pastor John Mawhirter will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
