Joseph P. Henry, 87, residing in Milan, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at his residence.
Joe was born on March 3, 1925 in Mansfield, Ohio to the late Harold H. and Louise D. (Droxler) Henry.
Joe was a 1943 graduate of Lakewood High School and is a member of their athletic hall of fame.
After graduation, he entered the Marines and proudly served his country from 1943-1946, where he fought in World War II and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
He attended the Ohio State University and received a Bachelor's degree in business and was a member of the Rose Bowl football team of 1950, as well as a member of their track team.
He was the owner and founder of Sandusky Imported Motors, the vice president of Homestead Inc. and vice president of Homestead Farms.
In 1955, he founded and became the president of the Growers Chemical Corp. He was the regional director of the International Arabian Horse Association for 10 years. He was a member of the Sandusky Sailing Club, the Sandusky Yacht Club, the Catawba Island Club, the US Sailing Club, the OSU Varsity 'O' Club, the Milan Chamber of Commerce, where he received the Business of the Year award in 2005. He was also a member of the MG Car Association of Ohio, and was the honorary chairman of the Mills Trophy Race.
In his spare time, Joseph enjoyed sailing, antique cars, horses, skiing and especially spending time with his family.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanette (Russell), whom he married on Oct. 26, 1957; his daughter Jeanette L. (Richard A. Bobel) Henry of Milan, his brother, William D. Henry of Upper Arlington and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his sister, Virginia H. Ward and one grandson, William H. Bobel.
Friends may call on Friday, October 12, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory-Milan Chapel, 1 S. Main St., Milan. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Milan chapel. Burial will follow in Milan Cemetery.
